High Limit Racing Series Director Mike Hess revealed there was an equipment malfunction that caused a delay in Rico Abreu going over the scales after he won the opening night of the Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway.

After winning a highly entertaining race that saw Abreu charge from ninth to get the win, he went to the scales as is typical for the winner and the top three finishers. However, while he was there, there was a little bit of a hiccup.

 Abreu was initially pushed on to the scales, but he was then backed off slightly. A few moments later and Abreu was waved back on to the scales and then waved through by a High Limit Racing official.

Abreu was then pushed off the scales and a wait ensued. He was then slightly backed up to the scales, but never pushed back on them. After that he was waved through to victory lane.

Series Director Mike Hess informed StockCarReport.com that the whole thing was a result of an equipment malfunction. He explained, “We use a wireless scale system from Longacre that works flawlessly as long as the batteries don’t go dead. We put new batteries in last week and one set of batteries decided it was done working.”

“We proceeded with victory lane and had an official with each car go through the entire process,” he continued. “While victory lane proceedings were happening, our tech official got the backup set of scales and put them into the scale ramps. Once Victory Lane ended, we weighed the top three without any issue.”

“It was an unfortunate time for an equipment malfunction, but we did the best with the scenario,” he concluded.

High Limit Racing is back at Silver Dollar Speedway for night two of the Gold Cup Race of Champions. After last night’s race, Kaleb Montgomery is the high point man with Rico Abreu just three points behind. After tonight’s race the top four in points will lock themselves into the $100,072-to-win finale on Saturday night.
