Trey Mills shared more details about what happened that saw him end up on his roof at Southern Iowa Speedway with the World of Outlaws Late Models on Wednesday night.

On lap 14 of the 35-lap feature, Mills flipped over on the backstretch in front of the race leaders. Dustin Sorensen locked up his brakes and spun into the wall to avoid Mills’ car that had come to a stop on its lid in the middle of the race track. Mills climbed from the car and walked away from the wreck.

Mills spoke with DIRTVision ahead of racing action at Shelby County Speedway on Saturday night sharing, “I had experienced a wreck like that before, but definitely not going that fast. Overall, it was just not a good night for us. I qualified bad and then I screwed up in the heat race. Just put us behind the 8-ball in the feature. And then, you know, we just had bad luck in the feature.”

“Had that right front go down in turn 3 and it just shot straight toward the fence,” he explained. “And from there I was just holding on. Hit the wall pretty good and then it ended up tipping over.”

“Safety equipment did its job and I was all good. It sucks, but it’s part of it. Can’t really worry about. I mean, obviously, stuff like that’s going to happen. But you know whenever you climb into that car there’s obviously a chance that something like that can happen, but you got all the safety equipment on. So going out there last night I wasn’t even thinking about the wreck on Wednesday night. I was just going out there and giving it 110% every time I go on the track, which is what I try to do every race.”

Trey Mills isn’t letting Wednesday night’s wild ride slow him down.

Following the wreck, Derrick Stewart shared his perspective on what happened telling DIRTVision, “I think something in his right front broke or the right front tire went down on, it just went right on him into the fence. I didn’t really know which way to go. He hit the fence and then he kinda started making his way down the race track so you just got to try to slow down without causing anymore havoc.”

Mills’ team had also previously confirmed that it was a right front flat tire that caused the wreck. The team shared on Facebook, “Trey blew a tire and hit the wall head-on, causing the car to flip. Thankfully, Trey is safe and walked away from the wreck! “

We don’t have any video of the accident, but Trey said it was the hardest he has ever hit the wall.” the team added. “We are beyond thankful that he was not hurt—because at the end of the day, that is all that truly matters!”

Mills is in a heated battle with Daulton Wilson for the MD3 Rookie of the Year battle. Mills had taken a single point lead heading to Iowa, but has seen that quickly turn into a deficit. Following the race at Adams County, Mills is 69 points behind Wilson.
