The World of Outlaws Late Model Series race at Shelby County Speedway had plenty of good racing along with some last lap drama involving race leaders Daulton Wilson and Bobby Pierce.

On the final lap of the race, Daulton Wilson spun in the middle of turns 1 and 2. Pierce, who had been hounding him trying to find away around him was close behind him and had nowhere to go slamming into his side. The contact from Pierce, allowed Wilson to keep his wheels spinning and the Outlaws officials ruled that the caution only involved Pierce.

On the DIRTVision broadcast, announcer Ruben Mireles explained, “Obviously, Pierce will have to go to the rear for coming to a stop. His four Hoosier tires stopped on the speedway. No judgement calls with the Outlaws. Daulton Wilson kept rolling here in the 58V.”

He reiterated, “With the World of Outlaws we always say no judgement calls. Again, no judgement calls. The way we call a caution is if your four Hoosier tires come to the stop you are the cause of the yellow. It is a single car caution because the 32 of Pierce is the only driver that stopped on the speedway. So the 58V of Wilson kept rolling. So he will continue to lead. It is a single car caution for the 32 of Pierce. He will go to the rear of the lead lap cars in front of the lap cars.” 

A World of Outlaws official also shared with StockCarReport.com, “Wilson’s wheels never stopped turning, Pierce’s did. Wilson retains his spot, Pierce does not.”

As for the rule, that it is not clearly stated in the Series’ rulebook. The rule in the book states, “Any car that spins, is involved in an incident, and/or has a problem but does not bring out the yellow flag and/or create a caution period, will blend back into the field where the driver is able to do so. If there is an inadvertent caution period, the Series Officials will determine the placement of the car(s) involved. The placement of the car will be where the car blended back into the field.”

The key point there being that one can blend back in if they don’t bring out the yellow flag or create a caution period. So that begs the question: Why was Daulton Wilson not ruled as bringing out the yellow flag when he was the one who initially spun? 

Well, Race Director Mitchell Hedstrom explained that a caution can come out on a car and they can still blend back in. He told DirtonDirt.com in April, “If a caution comes out on a car that does not come all the way to a complete stop, he is able to blend back in where he rolls into the field under yellow, but it no longer includes the 360 portion aspect of it because to do a 360 and go all the way around, you’ll go all the way to the tail just because we don’t want people gassing it back up in front of the field, creating a blockage on the racetrack or creating a bigger safety concern as far as going all the way around and trying to keep their momentum without coming to a stop.”
