Chris Ferguson has had a standout weekend so far at Eldora Speedway for the World 100. That performance has him unphased after Brandon Sheppard rolled a six on the Wheel of Misfortune putting Ferguson sixth to start Heat 2 on Saturday night.
Ferguson started the weekend off strong on Thursday. He qualified second in Group A. That gave him a sixth place starting spot in Shootout 2. He worked his way up three spots to finish third. In the feature, he, again, moved forward advancing from eighth to finish fourth.
On Friday night, he put up the fastest lap in Group B. He started the fourth Shootout in sixth and finished third. He then advanced five positions from seventh to finish second.
Following his second place finish, Brandon Sheppard rolled six on the Wheel of Misfortune inverting Saturday’s heat races by six positions. Given Ferguson was the second highest in Eldora’s Every Lap Matters points system, he will start sixth in Heat 2.
Ferguson was unphased with the Wheel of Misfortune invert, “We started there all weekend. Luckily, we had two heat races to practice for it. Here we are starting sixth again.”
“We are locked in no matter what for the top two in points,” he added. “So that’s a massive positive, but we’ll do what we can to win the heat race so we can go out there and win a World 100.”
On top of being unphased with the invert, Ferguson is confident in his program as well, “Honestly, where I was two years ago to now, I’m back. I feel like I’m back to being competitive and contending for wins here at Eldora. Super thankful for that. Blessed to be able to be here and got all the right people in the right place.”
That confidence in his program and team has seemingly allowed him to be very aggressive on the track and make moves that impressed one of the most aggressive drivers out there: Bobby Pierce.
In the closing laps of the feature on Friday night, Pierce closed in on Ferguson to try and grab the second spot. He dived underneath him into turn 1, but Ferguson drove it in just as hard with Tyler Carpenter above both of them. Fergie’s car stuck to the track through the middle and he was able to hold off Pierce while also maintaining speed on the exit of turn 2 to clear Carpenter.
Pierce discussed the battle telling StockCarReport.com, “I told Ferguson, I said, ‘He’s a crazy [son of a gun]. We were three-wide and he was just on the gas. And we were laughing about it.”
In regards to what a World 100 win would mean to Ferguson, he shared, “It’d be massive. I think it’s the coveted win and trophy out of all of them. If I could finally get one, it’d be really nice. We’ve ran really good in this race and really good in the Crown Jewels here, we just haven’t got one. Just hoping to get one finally.”
Hot laps for the World 100 begin at 6:30 PM with heat race action expected to start at 7:30 PM. The top three from each of the six heat races will advance to the world 100. Each heat race is 15 laps long.
Those finishing in positions 4-11 in the heat races will move to a B-Feature. There will be two B-Features with the top two finishers from those races advancing to the World 100.
