Michael Dutcher explained his decision to put Kerry Madsen into the 17GP car to close out the High Limit Racing season.
Madsen became available after Vermeer Motorsports decided to replaced him with Brady Bacon ahead of the High Limit Racing races at Lucas Oil Speedway earlier in the month of September.
Dutcher spoke with Connor Ferguson of Always Race Day about the decision to bring in Madsen at Kokomo Speedway for the High Limit race there before it was eventually postponed to this Sunday due to rain.
“Just a situation where Kerry was available with the recent things that happened with him,” Dutcher said. “He was kind of sitting idle and we just had an opportunity to give him a call and see if he was available to drive and he jumped on it.”
“We’re close to home this weekend,” he continued. “So it was just a perfect opportunity to blend in. Kerry’s a long time Sprint Car racer, long time World of Outlaw racer. He’s been running the whole High Limit schedule this year and he had to sit out last weekend, but we’re glad he was available and we’re looking forward to racing with him.”
As for what he brings to the team and car, Dutcher said, “He’s got a lot of experience, right? He’s been at it for so long. Just a veteran racer and he’s been to all these tracks. … But he can just help with some feedback and stuff experience-wise, point stuff out to us if there’s something that he thinks the race car needs. He’s pretty smart about that. So it will transfer to us and we’ll take car of it.”
“We’re lookin forward to it,” he concluded. “Kind of pumped up for the weekend.”
Madsen had one win, 6 top 5s and 21 Top 10s with Vermeer in 43 feature starts with High Limit Racing. His lone win came at Lucas Oil Speedway back in the middle of April. He is currently 10th in the High Limit Point standings just 34 points behind Daison Pursley, who sits in 9th, and 174 points behind 8th place Tanner Holmes.
Madsen replaces Brock Zearfoss who had been in the ride since July after replacing Hank Davis.
Zearfoss shared in a post to Instagram, “Yesterday I was informed I have been relieved of my duties with the 17GP. I want to thank Michael, Lance, Tyler, and Chad for there hard work while I was there. While disappointing, I understand the decision.”
“Not sure what I have in store yet for the remainder of the year but as always we will figure it out,” he concluded.

Madsen will be in action in the Dutcher Motorsports 17GP tonight as High Limit Racing takes on the Big E as part of the 4-Crown Nationals event. The series will be at Eldora tomorrow night as well. After Eldora it has a two-night show at Lakeside Speedway on October 9-10 for the Heartland of American Showdown presented by Hasty Bake. It then concludes for another two nights of racing at Texas Motor Speedway for the All-In Championship Weekend on October 16-17.
