Michael Leach saw his night end in heartbreak at Fairbury as he wrecked in the final corner on the last lap as he was in a battle for the lead with Jason Feger.
Leach started the night on the pole, but slipped back to third on the opening lap behind Jason Feger and Shannon Babb. That’s where he would ride for around the first 10 laps. He then made his move after Feger decided to move from the top to the bottom. Leach got it wound up on the top and drove past both Babb and Feger to take the lead.
For the next 8 laps, Leach would continue to hustle around the top and fend off Feger who continued to pressure him running around the bottom and middle of the track.
There would then be a string of cautions over the next 15 or so laps with a number of them for debris. Leach was able to maintain the lead on all of the restarts. On what looked to be the final restart with 15 laps to go, Leach pulled away looking like the win was all his.
Unfortunately, Trey Mills broke with three laps to go to bring him back to Feger and the rest of the field. Over the final three laps, Leach and Feger dueled side-by-side with Leach still running the top and Feger down below. On the final corner of the race, Leach made contact with the cushion with his right rear. That contact then appeared to whip the front of his car up and over the cushion and into the wall. As he climbed the cushion, his car got up on two wheels and he briefly rode the wall before coming to a stop and getting smacked by Mike Spatola.
On Facebook, Leach revealed that his right rear tire blew as soon as he hit the cushion on the final corner.
“Took the lead on lap 10 and ripped the FALS Cush the remaining 40 laps. Coming to the checkers around 3/4 our RR blew out as soon as we got into the cushion, happened fast. I really thought we had it in the bag and all of a sudden the car yanked right
”
“Hate it for my guys but either way we had a hell of a battle with our good friend and mentor Jason Feger Racing, I always knew that me and Feger would be racing for a win around Fairbury someday, at least we put on a show!!”
Leach concluded sharing the team would head to Eldora Speedway this upcoming weekend to battle with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series in its inaugural Clash at the Wabash race.
“Heads up, weโre fast again, going back to the Big E this coming weekend ![]()
#hornsup Thank you to everyone who makes this possible, those wins are coming for you soon
“
In victory lane, Feger expressed his sympathies saying, “Man, what a heartbreaker for Mikey. He’s a good buddy of mine. He’s a great kid. Man, he did a phenomenal job. That just sucks. I’m glad we won, but you don’t want to win them like that. I’d rather just pass him and come to a photo finish at the flag stand. What a heartbreaker for him, but he’s going to win some races.”
The win saw Feger significantly cut into Ryan Unzicker’s points lead. Unzicker had an 82-point lead heading into the FALS Frenzy this weekend, but is now down to just 36 points. Both drivers struggled on Friday night with Unzicker finishing 11th and Feger just one spot ahead of him in 10th. However, on Saturday night, after running around in fourth and fifth for the first half of the race, Unzicker ended his night in 20th. He suffered a flat right rear with 24 laps left and had to go to the rear of the field. Less than 10 laps later and his night was over.
He shared on Facebook that he was wrecked. “Saturnight at the FALS Frenzy started out as another great night fast time won our heat running 4th in the feature got a flat went to the back and got crashed that resulted in a DNF.”
