Alex Yankowski Aims To Clinch First Super DIRTcar Series Title At World Finals

November 3, 2026  ·

Eight months of exciting moments, side-by-side battles, and monumental victories end this weekend as the Super DIRTcar Series heads to North Carolina.

The Beasts of the Northeast will finish its 2026 season at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, NC, in the Dave Smith Motors World of Outlaws World Finals, Nov. 4-7.

Drivers kick off the event on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with Qualifying night, setting the lineups for Heat Races on Thursday and Friday. Then, they’ll return on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, for a 30-lap Feature paying $10,000-to-win.

Results from the first two nights will matter, as the driver’s best finish will set the Heat Race lineups for the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 7. That race will be a 40-lap Feature paying $15,000-to-win and will culminate with the crowning of the 2026 champion.

Joining the Super DIRTcar Series are the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars and the World of Outlaws Late Models Series presented by DIRTVision.

Here’s a look at what to watch for at Charlotte:

Completing the Quest: Three races remain in 22-year old Alex Yankowski’s quest to become the youngest champion in Super DIRTcar Series history. That mantle is currently held by Alan Johnson, who won the championship in 2022 at age 24. . “Kid Rocket” enters the weekend with an 89-point lead over three-time and defending champion Mat Williamson after adding his 11th podium finish of the season and 18th straight top 10.

Yankowski, from Covington Township, PA, has finished in the top 10 in six of his last seven starts at Charlotte, including a second in last year’s season finale. Overall, he finished in the top 10 in 10 of his 14 starts. World Finals is also where he earned his first career Super DIRTcar Series win in 2021.

A win this weekend would be his ninth career Series victory.

Despite the deficit, Mat Williamson can still mathematically win the 2026 Super DIRTcar Series title after gaining momentum with his win at Georgetown. The St. Catharines, ON driver won the final event of the season last year at Charlotte and has reached Victory Lane on five occasions.

If “Money Mat” wins at World Finals, he would tie Matt Sheppard and Tim Fuller for the most Big Block victories at the 4/10-mile. It’ll also be his 41st career Series victory.

Payne vs. Phelps: The battle for third in the Series standings couldn’t be any closer, with Jimmy Phelps holding a one-point advantage over Alex Payne for the spot.

Phelps moved into third on Saturday after finishing second to Williamson and has found past success at Charlotte. The “Baldwinsville Bandit” was the first World Finals winner in 2010 and backed it up with another triumph in 2019. He’s earned five straight top 10s at the track and has eight top fives and 22 top 10s in 36 starts.

He’s searching for his third win of 2026, and 25th career victory.

Payne, meanwhile, scored his first win at Charlotte last year, but has struggled of late in Super DIRTcar Series events, earning three consecutive finishes outside the top 10. However, two of his last three finishes at Charlotte are on the podium.

The Hopewell, NY driver is aiming for his second Series win of 2026 and sixth of his career.

Feels Like the First Time: Charlotte has produced multiple first-time winners, with Yankowski, Mathieu Desjardins, and Tim Kerr each grabbing their first Super DIRTcar Series checkered flag during World Finals. Two drivers aiming to continue that trend are Jack Lehner and Felix Roy, who are separated by 23 points for fifth.

After a ninth at Georgetown, Lehner has finished in the top 10 in eight straight Features, and in 10 of his last 11 starts. The one race where the Saratoga Springs, NY driver didn’t finish in the top 10 in that stretch was at Airborne Park Speedway, where he had engine issues while running in second.

Lehner had a 10th, 12th, and third in last year’s World Finals, and is only 24 points behind Phelps for third.

Roy, meanwhile, led laps in last year’s season finale before finishing 19th. The Napierville, QC driver has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four Charlotte starts, including a top five during Friday’s Feature last year.

“Hollywood” has top 10s in nine of his last 11 Super DIRTcar Series Features, including a top five at Autodrome Drummond and at Super DIRT Week.

The Fight for the Top: Positioning to get a piece of the $200,000 Super DIRTcar Series points fund isn’t the only battle to watch this weekend. Three drivers in the field can leave Charlotte as the winningest Big Block driver at the track.

Matt Sheppard leads all drivers with six victories at the 4/10-mile, with his last coming on opening night of last season’s World Finals. However, that triumph was the last time the Savannah, NY driver reached Super DIRTcar Series Victory Lane.

Sheppard has top-10 finishes in seven of his last nine Super DIRTcar Series Features at World Finals, including six top fives and four podium finishes. He’s searching for his 104th Series victory.

Williamson is right behind Sheppard with five wins, along with Tim Fuller, who recently won in 2023 and 2024. The Edwards, NY driver also earned a win earlier this season, besting the field in the Stars and Stripes Spectacular at Land of Legends Raceway.

Fuller is searching for his 38th Super DIRTcar Series win.
