Landen Lewis shared his thoughts after he was involved in a wreck with Mini Tyrell and Landon Huffman racing for the lead during the CARS Tour race at Caraway on Tuesday night.

Following a restart with 18 laps to go, Tyrell was able to beat Lewis on the restart and then pinched him down going into turn 1. Lewis then drifted up the corner to push Tyrell wide, but clipped his left front tire and then monster trucked over his left front fender. Jared Fryar, who eventually won was able to slip underneath the two as they wrecked while Landon Huffman, who might have had the fastest car up to that point, got clipped in the left rear by Trevor Ward and sent up the track into Lewis.

Lewis was eventually able to return to the track and salvage a 13th place finish just a spot behind Connor Hall, who he is in a tight points battle with for the CARS Tour championship.

Short Track Scene’s Matt Weaver spoke with Lewis after the race about the incident saying, “It was just a racing incident. Me and Mini got into it and got together. The restart before that it almost happened again. So it was just bound to happen at some point. It sucks. It’s a little bit on both sides I feel like. A little bit of my fault, a little bit of his. … It just sucks when you have good of a race car and it doesn’t work out, but that’s how it is and they don’t all work out in your way.”

When pressed for more details, he added, “To be honest with you, I really don’t know. I need to go back and look at the replay and get a good judge on it before I come on here and say something I don’t need to say and bash someone I don’t need to bash. So I got to look at the replay and go over everything.”

“I’m not going to give you a false answer,” he reiterated. “I’m not going to tell you a lie that I don’t really know yet. So I need to go back and look at the replay and understand really what happened leading up to that point. I don’t want to give you a false statement that’s not true and put someone mad at me for what I said about them.”

Later in the interview he shared he was upset with himself, “I’m more so upset of just myself. I’m smarter than that, better than that. These guys, we’ve all worked so freaking hard as fast as it does and tonight I’m more so upset that we had the best race car here hands down and it just didn’t work out.”

As for Mini Tyrell he spoke to Frontstretch telling the outlet, “I didn’t like the way he run me the last restart. He doored me pretty hard getting into turn 1. I beat him on the restart. [He was] playing games. He would like speed up out of the corner right out in the center of three and four and then he would slam on his brakes on a restart. I don’t know why we’re starting races like that. Restart problems race after race after race. We’re still doing it. So I beat him on the restart, still beat him after that. Got the edge getting into one. So I pinched him down a little bit just to the line. As I’d expect him to do to me. I don’t know. Rodney [Childers] come in here and told me that he just got tight. It was like we got to the center of the corner and he just, guess he just drove into me. He said his right front hit my left rear tire and it just hooked him into me. Wasn’t much I could do there.”

“It just sucks,” Tyrell added. “Landon is a good driver. He’s a good dude. He’s a really good dude. I like their whole organization. Just, it’s unfortunate. It’s the nature of this racetrack getting through one and two. It’s just so slick down there and it just sucks. Really sucks. I just don’t have the help. Trying to put this race car back together is going to be really tough. Just running out of money doing this stuff.”

“I’m just so disappointed for my guys. They brought such a fast car. … We had a rocket ship. I don’t think we would have won the race. I think he pry would have got back around me. It’s hard to tell you, but I mean we would have either won or finished second. Just sucks. It’s unfortunate,” he stated.

Later in the interview, Tyrell said, “I’m not terribly upset at Landen. It sucks. I wish we could have taken it back, maybe give him a touch more room and it wouldn’t have happened, but just it’s racing. It’s not the first time it’s going to happen. I’ve done it to people. I’m not going to sit here and just bash and bash and bash him. We all make mistakes. I’ve done it countless times and I’ll probably end up having to do it again. So I know he didn’t mean to do it. It’s not like he just went in there and cleaned me out for no reason. He’s trying to win a championship. So am I. It just sucks. It is what it is. We’ll move on and gather our stuff and go to the next one.”

Landon Huffman, who was the third car involved in the wreck also shared his opinion with Weaver, “From my opinion it looked like the 29 got beat on the restart, drove down here into the left rear of Mini. I don’t know if MIni chopped down on him or not, but in my opinion it was the 29’s fault from the onboard, but I haven’t watched [the replay] yet. So if I’m wrong on that that’s on me. But I’m just tired of the f**ing bulls**t. Excuse my language. But we worked too hard, fighting for everything we got out here, trying to build a program. I feel like we’ve done an excellent job preparing race cars and I put us in a hole in qualifying. Qualified respectable tonight and drove to the front just like I knew we would. And just some dumb s**t on the restart like that. The 29, you know, he’s supposed to be racing for a championship, but you don’t win a championship like that. As far as I’m concerned if I don’t have a shot at it I hope Mini’s got the upper hand when it comes to North Wilkesboro.”

Huffman also posted to X, “Best car on the premises the final 50 laps at Caraway. Up to 4th and tenths faster than field. Caught up in leaders dumb mess on restart following the comp caution and ruined our race. Gutted for my Carroll SpeedShop team. We are bringing awesome racecars. Our time is coming.”
