Stewart Friesen successfully underwent surgery to address the pelvis and leg injuries he suffered during a horrific wreck at Autodrome Drummond earlier this week.

Stewart’s wife Jessica Friesen reported on Tuesday morning that Friesen suffered a fractured right leg along with an unstable/open-book pelvic fracture, which meant his pelvis was broken in two or more places and he also had a large hematoma on the area.

The injuries were incurred during the Super DIRTcar Series race at Autodrome Dummond. Following a restart on lap 16, Friesen started in fourth and immediately went to the high side. Going down the back stretch, he found himself the top of three and ran out of race track. Friesen slipped off the top of the track and when he attempted to come back on going into turn 3, he clipped the outside wall and flipped upside down. His car then landed like a skateboard on the outside wall and exploded into flames. The car then corkscrewed off the wall and back on to the track. As it was about to land on its roof, he was struck by another driver before eventually coming to a stop.

Friesen was initially transported to a local hospital in Quebec, Canada, where his injuries were diagnosed. He was moved back to the United States to a level one trauma center in New York on July 31st.

On August 1st, Friesen’s wife Jessica shared that “Stewart had a successful multi-hour surgery last night to address both his pelvis and compound leg fracture, which went very well.”

“After surgery, he got some great rest overnight and we feel like we are moving forward,” she continued, “We are scheduled to meet with the physical therapist soon and continue to make a plan for Stewart’s road to recovery.”

Finally, she concluded, “We need to thank everyone at the hospital here in New York for their efforts yesterday, and everyone cheering us on and providing so much comfort to us. The racing community is truly a family, and we have felt that all week.”

Additionally, Jessica Friesen shared that the Friesen family “will not be setting up a GoFundMe or any other sort of charity account. If you see one, please know that unless it comes from us, it is not official and not supporting Stewart’s care.”

Instead, she encouraged people to “visit OneZeeTees.com and purchase your favorite racing shirt or collectible. I know that Stewart would want you to have something in return for supporting our family in this time.”
