CARS Tour competitor Landen Lewis called for fellow competitor Tristan McKee to be punished following a big wreck at the end of the Throwback race at Hickory Motor Speedway.

During a restart with 10 laps to go, Lewis started behind leader Tristan McKee. Everything went well through turns 1 and 2, but coming out of turn 4, Lewis put the bumper to McKee and got him sideways. Lewis then took the opportunity to dive below McKee and make it three-wide with Mini Tyrell on the top. As he was driving below McKee the two then made contact again, this time banging doors. McKee’s car then got sideways again down the front stretch and made contact with Lewis sending him spinning into the outside lane and making contact with Carson Loftin. Chaos ensued with Chad McCumbee, Treyten Lapcevich, and Layne Riggs all involved.

Speaking to FloRacing’s James Pike after the wreck, Lewis said, “We were three-wide coming off of four all racing for $50,000 to-win under 10 to go and all of a sudden the guy on the outside of me is turning hard left as we’re going down the straightaway and then eventually just right rear hooks me into the fence and destroys a bunch of race cars. I mean we’re racing hard. I didn’t feel like I did anything egregious and he decided to right rear hook me going down the straightaway. So little out of place and definitely taken way too far for sure. And I think something needs to be done about it. And that’s just unacceptable. You see it on Sundays and Saturdays and it’s unacceptable and it can get someone hurt. We’re all lucky we crawled out of the race cars.”

“It just sucks,” he continued. “This freaking car was so fast. I just wish we could have solved the deal and brought home $50,000 and just had a good night, honestly.”

Lewis eventually finished in 20th five laps down while McKee finished in 22nd. Mini Tyrell went on to win the race after CARS Tour officials ruled that Kaden Honeycutt jumped the restart and sent him to the rear of the field. He parked his car after the ruling.

CARS Tour owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently shared his thoughts on the wreck saying, “It’s kind of hard to tell what happened right after that. So there’s a crash on the front straightaway and it involved Landen Lewis and Tristan McKee. They were three-wide. There’s a car kinda on their outside coming off of turn 4 and Landen kind of rooted the 7 off of the bottom, which is good hard racing late in the race. Just got into his left rear quarter panel just the right way and gets up beside him. They’re side by side coming down the front straightaway and they make contact, both cars turn sideways and then spin back overcorrecting into the outside wall.”

Speaking specifically to Lewis’ claim that he got right rear hooked, Earnhardt said, “Honestly, I don’t know that Tristan was trying to hook [Lewis]. I don’t know that he was trying to hook him. Was he running into him? was he dooring him? Was he driving him down the track? It’s possible, yes. That he was trying to give it back a little bit too aggressively.”

The CARS Tour seemingly did not view the contact between McKee and Lewis as a right rear hook as it did not penalize McKee. However it did issue penalties to Talon Pelfrey, Matt Piercy, McKee’s car owner, and Wade Cannon. Pelfrey received a one-race suspension and $500 fine for leaving his assigned pit area “and entering a competitor’s car with the intent of harming the driver and/or damaging the car’s electrical system.” Piercy was fined $500 for leaving his assigned pit area to confront another competitor. Finally, Wade Cannon was issued a three-race suspension and $1000 fine for shoving a CARS Tour official. All three have also been put on probation until December 31, 2025.
