Ridge & Sons Racing revealed that Justin Sanders will continue in the team’s car as Aaron Reutzel continues to recover from the broken right foot injury he suffered during the Knight Before The Kings Royal feature.

While running in second on lap 15, Reutzel clipped the cushion and then flipped end over end while getting into turn 1. While airborne his wing caught the catch fence and turned the car so it landed on its side. He was then hit by Zach Hampton that lifted Ruetzel’s car airborne. Seconds later Steven Snyder Jr. plowed into him sending his car into the middle of turns 1 and 2.

Reutzel exited the car under his own power, but immediately fell to the ground and began crawling away from his vehicle.

The team reported in a now-deleted Facebook post that Reutzel underwent successful foot surgery. It stated, “We’re pleased to share that Aaron underwent successful foot surgery yesterday, to repair injuries that he sustained in his accident. The procedure went as planned, and his medical team is optimistic about a smooth and full recovery.”

Following Sanders and the team’s win at Placerville, where Reutzel served as crew chief, Reutzel shared with FloRacing’s Brian Walker aka Walkapedia that his timeline on getting back in the car would be determined by a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday. He said, ”

Tuesday I gotta go back and get X-rays and see how everything is going. The way the break was they’re kind of nervous on the healing process. So fingers cross that everything looks good. I’ve been trying my hardest to not overdo it and this and that. That’s part of the reason I’m not racing. I’ve been told by a lot, a lot of people even a couple specialists that you don’t want to mess around with this. If it starts off wrong they’ll have to rebreak it and start the process over. I just want this over with. So that’s the main reason I’m not in the car right now. I feel like I definitely could do it, but I just want this over with. I want to be back to normal and not have any more issues.”

“So we’ll find out Tuesday. Hopefully for some good news it’s all healing properly. The specialist knows what I do so I’ll just leave it in his hands from there. Like I said, I could get in earlier, but I want to do it the right way and hopefully be done with it forever. Tuesday will tell the tale.”

Now, in an interview with Sprint Car Unlimited, car-owner Brian Ridge revealed that Sanders will stay in the car for the rest of the West coast swing. He said, “I think everybody knows that it was wishful thinking that he would be healed up quicker than that with the broken bones he’s got. We were hoping for a great report.”

“Everybody is good, and it’s healing together,” he added. “It’s just a slow process, and the risk outweighs the reward to running a few nights and taking that chance of really hurting that foot to where you are screwed for life. So, he’s going to sit out and get ready for Port Royal.”

“I’m really hopeful Aaron will be ready to go. You add three more weeks in there, and that puts us at six weeks, which is what they told us to expect. So, we are feeling good about that,” he concluded.

The High Limit Racing series will be at Port Royal for three nights for the Tuscarora 50 beginning on September 4th. September 5th will be six weeks to the date from when he broke his foot at Eldora.

With Reutzel out of the car until September, Sanders will fill in for the rest of August with High Limit stops at Silver Dollar Raceway for the Gold Cup Race of Champions from August 21-23 and then a Monday race on August 25th at Douglas County Dirt Track in Roseburg, Oregon. He’ll close out the month at Skagit Speedway in Burlington, Washington for the Skagit Nationals from August 28-30. Depending on how the team and Sanders does in the rest of August, it’s very possible it could be leading the Owner points. As it stands now, following Sanders’ win at Placerville, they are only 15 points behind Brad Sweet and the Kasey Kahne Racing team.
