Rocket1 Racing announced that Josh Richards will not compete in the Hillbilly 100 tonight at Lernerville Speedway with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series after he lost an engine last night.
The team shared an update to social media writing, “Because Josh is not racing for points, we will not be fielding his car tonight after losing an engine last night. We will keep everyone updated on future plans!”

Richards had a good night going. He qualified third in Group A and started second in Heat 1. He would get passed by Ricky Thornton Jr. early in the race and then would have a great battle with Donald McIntosh for second for a couple of laps. However, he made a small mistake and very nearly rolled the car when he nearly went off the track coming off of turn 2. He would lose second to McIntosh as well as third to Max Blair and found himself fending off the final transfer spot from a threatening Chub Frank.
Following a caution with 5 to go, Richards was able to work his way back up to third around McIntosh. He would stay there through two more cautions for Frank and Haiden Cowan. While running in third with 2 laps to go his engine would give out and he would be done for the night.
It’s unclear when Richards might be back in a late model. It’s possible he might be back when the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series returns to the area for the Pittsburgher in the beginning of October at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. His dad indicated he hoped he would be able to compete in that race in an interview with DirtonDirt.com’s Kevin Kovac earlier this year.
