Brandon Overton outdueled Tyler Erb and Mark Whitener to claim the $5,000 National 100 preliminary on Friday night.

Overton started in fourth, after finishing second to Terbo in the first heat race. He quickly worked his way into the top three diving to the bottom of Dalton Cook as they took the green flag down the front straightaway. He slipped up a little bit in turn 3, but was able to gather it back up and held off an aggressive Jimmy Owens as they completed the first lap.

Following a caution around lap 5, Overton picked off Whitener on the restart. Coming off of turn 2, he crossed Whitener over down the back stretch and completed the pass with a slider through 3 and 4. Whitener attempted to counter in 1 and 2, but Overton retook the spot through 3 and 4.

Things settled down after a couple of green laps as everyone began running the same line at the top of the track. However, things got exciting once they got to the rear of the field and began navigating lap traffic. Overton and Whitener were able to close the gap to Terbo and a three-car battle for the lead ensued. Overton was able to take advantage of the lap traffic after Terbo went to slide the lap car of JR Moseley going into turn 1. However, Mike Benedum chose to diamond the corner and took away Terbo’s line and appeared to take the air off of him. Terbo slid up the track and made contact with Moseley. Meanwhile, Overton used the momentum he got from running the top to dive down below Whitener who had slid him. He kept that momentum up heading into three and four and was able to diamond the corner and split Whitener and Terbo to claim the lead.

Shortly after Overton took the lead and crossed the start/finish line, the caution would come out for Moseley whose car was injured after the contact with Terbo. Overton would never relinquish the lead. He would hold off both Terbo and Whitener through a number of restarts and took home the win.

Whitener was able to get past Terbo on one of those restarts after he slipped up on the cushion in 1 and 2.
