Mark Whitener appeared to have won the National 100 preliminary on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway with a dominating performance over Brandon Overton and Jimmy Owens, but after going through tech he was disqualified.
Whitener was able to take the lead on a gutsy move to the outside of Brandon Overton after he got caught behind the lap car of Matthew Larson. Overton attempted to go to the bottom of Larson, but he lost a ton of grip when he got down there. That allowed Whitener to jet by him on the outside. He then slid Larson through 3 and 4 to secure the lead. He would survive a number of restarts towards the end of the race, holding off both Overton and Jimmy Owens to cross the line first, but it was all for naught due to the disqualification.
During the broadcast, no explanation was provided as to why Whitener was disqualified, but his wife Bridget Whitener shared on social media that he was disqualified for not meeting the weight requirements. She shared, “I don’t think there are any words to describe the feeling… Heartache, frustration, anger & disappointment are a few.. We might have crossed that finish line first.. But ultimately we were the 1st loser tonight when we forgot to put fuel in the car before the feature..”
“We would like to say Thank you to All of Our Sponsors,” she concluded.
With Whitener disqualified, Jimmy Owens, who had crossed in second, was awarded the win and the $10,000 payday. Owens confirmed that Whitener was light at the scales. He wrote on X, “Hate Mark Whitener didn’t make weight, but we put ourselves in position to take advantage of his misfortune. Thanks to everyone associated with Koehler Motorsports – our great partners, crew, and fans!!!”
