Jonathan Davenport looked to be one of the favorites heading into the feature for night 1 of the World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, but he faded early and then with about 11 laps left his car slowed up and exited the race.

Davenport qualified well on Wednesday night and it set him up on the pole of heat race #4. While he did not win his heat he finished a respectable second to winner Brandon Overton and had pulled to his bumped by the end of the heat, but just ran out of laps to finish the pass.

That set him up for a respectable 8th place start, but once the green dropped Davenport fell back to 12th. He would eventually work his way back up into the top 10. However, with about 11 laps left in the 35-lap feature, his car came up lame and he slowed on the front stretch.

Davenport spoke to StockCarReport.com about what happened, “First of all, missed setup a little bit. Fell back. Just a whole lot freer than what we thought we was gonna be. But then, I think, we probably broke a ring gear in the rear end there. At first, I thought it was a drive shaft, but it ended up being a ring gear in the rear end.”

As for his setup, he shared, “We just didn’t adjust enough. It was really good in the heat race and really good here when we changed it. So we didn’t figure too far off of that and just didn’t go far enough.”

“We just hadn’t put hard tires on yet,” he explained. “Hadn’t had the opportunity to do it. I knew it was going to change it some, but I didn’t think it was going to be that much. So, may bad, but we’ll be better tomorrow.”

Davenport revealed he would be making some changes for tonight, “We’ll change the rear end and probably transmission, drive shaft, everything, and make sure we got no more problems.”
