Tulsa Shootout Director of Operations Matt Ward shared why Jett Yantis was disqualified after he had seemingly won in the A-Class.
Speaking to FloRacing, Ward said, “The Tech Director and the guys that are teching the engines, they found those illegal-. There’s an illegal head. The bolt was ported over a 1/4 inch past the valve seat, and epoxy all over the cylinder head, and there’s ceramic bearing in the transmission. So can’t have that. So he was disqualified.”
“So they checked Frank Flud’s engine and everything passed tech. So he’s our winner,” he concluded.
Yantis started the 30-lap feature on the pole and immediately jumped out to the lead over Austin Torgerson. He was never really challenged the entire race and was able to navigate lap traffic pretty efficiently compared to those chasing him including Torgerson, Daison Pursley, and Frank Flud.
As the laps wound down Torgerson and Flud appeared to be closing and might mount a last lap challenge, but it was not meant to be as Torgerson broke right before he took the white flag. After a two-lap shootout Yantis was able to hug the bottom and hold off Flud.
After Yantis was disqualified, Flud reacted to being named the winner, “At the end of the day, I’m holding the little guy and that’s all that matters. I mean I don’t want to win it that way. I hate that that happened like that.”
“Maybe next year we can talk to a few guys. Maybe talk to some Flo people and get my own little personal donut sesh so I can at least celebrate a little bit on it,” he added. “There’s just so many amazing people to thank: God, my wife, my dad, Brady Morgan at Metric Cycles, Engler Machine and Tool, Outlaw Wings, PureMax Race Oils, Hyper Racing, F&M Performance, Disinger Racing Products, Smith Titanium. I wouldn’t be anywhere without all of those people and everybody that’s standing down here that you hear and see in the background. It’s amazing to continue my program throughout my career.”
As for what the win means, Flud said, “Honestly, at the end of the day, A-Class wing is always like my best class. I call it my class, but I’ve never got this little guy in the A-Class wing. I think I’ve run 2nd like 7 times, I think. And I think this was like the 8th. So it was like another kick in the teeth and a reason to come back to this building. Maybe I can retire from one class or something. I keep saying I’m going to, but I’m sure Ashton won’t let me yet.”
