Garrett Alberson Dominates Night 5 Of The Wild West Shootout

Garrett Alberson totally dominated the fifth night of the Wild West Shootout at Central Arizona Raceway leading every single lap.

Alberson jumped out to the lead on the first lap from the pole and never looked back as the entire race stayed green from start to finish. He had gapped Jonathan Davenport, who ran in second much of the race, by over 5 seconds. There were only 11 cars of the the 25-car field left on the lead lap by the end of the race.

While Alberson stretched his lead out and kept putting lap cars between him and Davenport, there was a phenomenal race for third and fourth for much of the race between Hudson O’Neal and Bobby Pierce.  The two traded the spot numerous times and were side by side and throwing sliders for what seemed like at least 90% of the race. Davenport eventually found himself involved in that battle at the end of the race when O’Neal was able to work around him in the closing laps.

Despite dominating the entirety of the race, Alberson did have a little bit of a scare coming to the white flag as he slid Clay Stuckey through turns 3 and 4 and smacked the wall pretty hard. However, he was able to gather it up and bring home the win. He told FloRacing’s Trenton Berry about it in victory lane, “I kind of caught lap traffic there and I really wasn’t sure where to be at. I was getting a little warm at times. I was trying to manage that. It was so dirty and stuff. So I was trying to pick my battles, but a couple times I just had to go, you know what I mean. Everybody did a good job.”

Hudson O’Neal who finished second admitted he had nothing for Alberson and even a yellow wouldn’t help him, “Garrett had the better race car tonight. Felt like we made the best out of what we had. Just got to second there really late in the race with 1 or 2 to go. I know Garrett was up there racing, but me and Bobby, and JD, we threw sliders forever. Another awesome race track they gave us tonight. It was a little rough and tumble in the bottom of 1 and 2, which upset my race car a little bit, and we couldn’t get through that bottom as good down there as we had been able to all week.”

“Go back and work on it a little bit and hopefully we can have another good night, and lock up this points deal for the week, and maybe we’ll get one more coming out of here,” he concluded.

Davenport finished third, his best finish of the series so far, and he shared that he still had some things to improve on, “It gets really dark right around that wall and I couldn’t really figure out exactly where to hit the cushion at to not push. But still just a little too tight. Just keep working on this thing like I said.”

“We’re definitely better than we have been,” he continued. “Just need to get a little bit better.”
