Cody Overton announced that his Speedweeks are already over before it even began.
Overton shared in a post to Facebook that both of his motors failed last night during practice night at Volusia Speedway Park for the Sunshine Nationals, which begin today.
He wrote, “Racing can be cruel sometimes. Unfortunately, our Speedweeks are over before they truly began after failures in both of our motors last night.”
“We’ll take a few weeks to regroup, reset, and get ready for the next chapter. This team doesn’t quit,” he concluded.
The news is even more heart-wrenching given Overton took over ownership duties for his team and this would have been his first race of the season. He shared with WorldofOutlaws.com earlier this month that his car owner Dave Steine decided to scale back his role in the operation and gave the reigns to him, “Dave, he’s still going to help a little bit, just kind of back scaled.”
“I had to kind of take it all over and start doing it myself running as my own team, so that’s going to be a big change for this year,” he said. “He’ll still direct me and help me, look out after me, I guess. It’s just going to be a lot different, I suppose. I’ve got to start nickel and diming more, but for the last two years I’ve been with him, I’ve kind of ran it like it was my own. I watched what I spent, I didn’t just go spend reckless money because it wasn’t mine.”
At the time, Overton was optimistic about 2026, “I think it’s going to be a lot better this year. I feel like I’ve got way more experience now and really know what’s going on. That was the big deal, I just didn’t want to give up another year. I just wanted one more year because I really want to win one bad. I really feel like this maybe will be the year, so hopefully it all works out.”
