Things looked grim for Cody Overton following the practice night at Volusia Speedway Park ahead of the opening weekend of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, he had blown two motors during practice and indicated his Speedweeks were over.
Overton posted on Facebook, “Racing can be cruel sometimes. Unfortunately, our Speedweeks are over before they truly began after failures in both of our motors last night.”
“We’ll take a few weeks to regroup, reset, and get ready for the next chapter. This team doesn’t quit,” he concluded.
However, Overton revealed last night that he was able to get an engine. He wrote in an update on Facebook, “Blessed. See y’all tomorrow night”
He spoke with DirtVision where he shared how he blew his two motors, “Practice day, made it out there. Put it in high gear. Made it down the back straightaway and put her back in the fence. Blew the first one up. Getting my second one and I made it down the front straightaway. Took her out of the gate again. I don’t know just crazy freak deal is what happened. One was brand new. The other one was the one I ran from last year. It just wasn’t kind of meant to be.”
He then clarified that he did not think his entire Speedweeks would be over, “I didn’t think I was going to be completely done. It was just going to take a little more time than I thought. And I know getting into this: buying it, owning it, everything. I knew a motor was going to blow. Didn’t know when. Didn’t think it was going to be the first night. So that made it a lot worse.
“It was just going to take me some time,” he continued. “But then I was just coming through the pits and the guy that helped me doesn’t want to be said or talked about. He’s anonymous. So he told me, ‘Hey, I got a motor for you. Do you want to race?’ And I said, ‘I’d love to.’ And he said, ‘Well, you need to run them points.’ And he made it happen. He got me a motor here and that’s where we’re at.”
While Overton did not make it on to the track with his car last night, he did receive show up points given he pill drew. Additionally, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series takes the best five finishes during its Speedweeks events which includes the first three races this weekend at Volusia, three races from February 12-14 at Volusia, and the two Swamp Cabbage 100 races on February 20-21.
