Aaron Reutzel currently leads the High Limit Racing championship after his most recent win at Kokomo Speedway for the Bryan Clauson Hero Classic. In victory lane he discussed how he changed his diet from last year and how it has improved his capabilities as a driver.

He told FloRacing’s Tony LaPorta, “Well, everyone can buy all the best stuff and everyone out here has all the best stuff. So at some point you’ve got to look at yourself and you got to try to make yourself better than everyone. And I looked Rico [Abreu] and what he did last year and he’s in the gym every night and I’d be sitting in my chair or sitting at the shop drinking beer every night. So I’m like I got to do something about that because it’s beyond tough out here. And if you can get any little edge you have to.”

“Like I said it was tough. It was tough to lose 27 lbs. It was hard, but now the goal is to keep it off.”

Reutzel previously discussed his diet and workout routine with Jeremy Elliott of Sprint Car Unlimited back in March while discussing his championship pursuit, “I know Rico is only getting better and better and his fitness and everything he’s got going on. He’s got a lot going on for him as well. So I had to try up my game this year fitness-wise.”

When asked to elaborate on it, he shared, “I’d done it before. It was probably like 2019, I think, I really got into it. It was kinda that time that Donny [Schatz] got real skinny and he got fit and then goes out and wins 30 races that one year. That was kind of the time I was only about racing. So I’ve kind of neglected it a lot. But with my foot getting hurt, I laid around for two months doing nothing and just laid around and drank beer and ate food. Definitely put on a lot of weight when I was hurt. So I needed to get that weight back off.”

“At the same time, it was like, Rico’s winning all of these races and he’s in the gym every single day so I need to do something about that as well if I’m going to try to be on his level,” he concluded.

Reutzel’s win at Kokomo is his fourth of the season in just 13 features. It allowed him to take control of the points lead and give himself a 9 point advantage over Tanner Thorson. He has a 28 point lead over Rico Abreu, who sits third in points.
