Jonathan Davenport responded to critics that accused him of cherry picking after he after he won both races at Batesville Motor Speedway for the Bad Boy 98.
Davenport rolled into Arkansas and won the preliminary night pocketing $5,000. He then took home the feature on Saturday night pocketing $12,000. On top of that he claimed the $10,000 win bonus put up by Mark Martin Automotive bringing his total winnings for the weekend to $27,000.
On Facebook following his sweep of the Bad Boy 98, a number of individuals accused him of cherry picking. One individual simply commented, “Cherry picking.” Another posted, “He should have lapped the field! Cherry pickin.”
Another accused, “He’s got no competition lol. Liked the guy but looks like he’s now avoiding competition and getting fast cash from those less unfortunate than him.”
“I hope he would win considering the competition he had #weaksauce,” commented another.
Davenport responded to his critics with a post on Facebook. He wrote, “Been accused of it lately. Don’t care. We’re going to keep cashing big checks and racking up huge stacks.”
He then shared some new Cherry Picker t-shirts, “These brand-new Cherry Picker t-shirts are now available online at www.49apparel.com and will start shipping next week. Sorry to our fans here in Nebraska, but they are not on the souvenir trailer this weekend at Eagle Raceway.”
While Davenport is not running with a national tour this year, he’s been extraordinarily good nearly everywhere he goes and has already raked in $220,500 in just victory winnings for the year. He’s won 9 of the 28 features he started. That’s an astounding 32% win percentage. Three of those wins came at Golden Isles Speedway against the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series at the beginning of March. He then took home two wins at Lucas Oil Speedway in the middle of April for the 13th Annual MLRA Spring Nationals.
After that he went to Volunteer Speedway and took home two wins during the 1st Annual Gauntlet at the Gap. He won on April 14th and then the finale on April 18th. That April 18th win allowed him to pocket the Gauntlet’s $100,000 bonus for winning both the feature and one of the races earlier in the week.
And while Davenport has a 32% win percentage for features that he makes, when he’s not winning he’s finishing in the top 5. He has 18 top 5s in 28 features. That means when he starts a feature he’s finishing in the top 5, nearly 65% of the time.
Even when he faces some setbacks as he did at the end of April when the World of Outlaws went to Mississippi Thunder Speedway, where he failed to make the show on the first preliminary night, he and his team kept working at it and were able to get a podium finish to close out the weekend.
