Garrett Alberson’s team confirmed their driver had been checked out and was okay after he was involved in a wicked wreck at Lucas Oil Speedway while leading his heat race.

On the second lap of his heat race, Alberson drove it into turn 1 and as he was heading into the middle of 1 and 2 his car dug into the track and was lifted up into the air. He then violently flipped around four times before the car came to a stop on its roof.

Alberson exited the car and indicated he was okay, but a little shook up. He told FloRacing’s Dustin Jarrett, “Yea, I think so. Probably shook up a little bit. I was not expecting that. I guess the right rear was a little too stuck right there. I turned in and I did about what I did the lap before, I thought, maybe a little more speed, but I could run that bottom so good with speed. It just hooked before I could even blink.” When asked if the front bumper hooked, he said, “No, it felt like-. Well, maybe it did, but it felt like the right rear just jabbed really hard and it tipped it up really quick. I think the bumper come off after it dug the ground. Yea, it’s a bummer. This is a good car. We had a good weekend going. We’ll see if we can rally a little bit.”

Alberson and his team would go to a backup car for the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson. He was able to climb from 10th to 5th in his B-Main, but had to take a provisional to get into the feature. In the feature, he pulled in early and finished dead last in 28th.

However, in the postponed Cowboy Classic that was ran as the final feature of the night, Alberson started fourth and had spirited battles with Chris Ferguson, Brandon Overton, and eventual race winner Josh Rice throughout the night. He would finish in second and heaped praise on his team for getting the car prepared, “Well, really, I just got a heck of a team right here. I just got to thank Zach, Jeff, and Paden, Donald earlier in the year, Nathan’s here helping us. Ken, Benny, Longhorn. We’ve just got so many good people. Glenn at Clements, I don’t thank them enough for everything they do for us.”

He added, “Man, I really wanted that so bad. I was falling out of the seat a little bit, kinda been a long day. So just made too many mistakes there and knocked the spoiler off of it.”

Finally, when asked how he approached the race knowing that if anything happens to the car it could end his weekend, he said, “Luckily, my Dad, he instilled in us a good attitude. And one of the first days I ever drove a race car, I crashed the bejeesus out of it and then he told me I had to get back in another one. So it’s like get back on the horse. It’s part of it.”

Following the conclusion of the race and in the wee hours of the morning, Alberson and his team shared an update on his health. The team posted to Facebook, “Garrett has been checked out and he’s okay.”

“We want to send some big thank you’s out,” they continued. “First, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series staff and the first responders at Lucas Oil Speedway did a fantastic job making sure Garrett was okay and then getting him checked out, we appreciate that alot. Second, Longhorn Chassis built us a very safe race car. Despite losing pieces off of it, every safety component that we needed to keep Garrett safe was intact and operational. We were able to walk away from that because they’ve done a good job. Third, Zach Huston, Jeff Garner, Paden Hines, Ken, and Nathan Lavender worked their absolute tails off to make that comeback, a huge huge thank you to our crew, thanks for having our backs.”

“Finally, thanks to our fans, friends and family for the support in all other ways yall showed up tonight. Watching Weston, checking on Garrett and Dani, bringing food, moral support, buying merch, it all helps. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We feel so thankful for each of you, and we’re so excited for baby boy #2 💙 on the way,” the team concluded.
