Derrick Stewart reacted to a massive hit he took that ended his night on Friday night while competing at Salina Highbanks with the MLRA series.

On a restart with 19 laps left in the 30-lap feature, Stewart started in the second row behind race leader Jonathan Davenport and outside of Eli Ross. Stewart got a good start and pulled an entire car length ahead of Ross down the front stretch. He entered in the middle of the corner while Ross dove underneath him. As he was going through the middle of the corner the two collided and the contact sent Stewart’s car head first into the outside wall, where he suffered a massive hit.

After he made contact with the wall, the impact lifted his car into the air and spun him 270° around.

On Facebook, following the wreck, Stewart shared, “Just going to leave this one here…The car was fast last night. Driver hit his marks perfect, restarts were top notch, and then this happened…”

He continued, “We were right there with the leader Jonathan Davenport, racing for the win, if not a 2nd place finish… Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug.. unfortunately last night we were the bug.”

Given the damage, Stewart did not compete on Saturday night. Additionally, in an update on Monday morning the team shared that it will not race this week, but will instead take the week off to get the car prepared for the Gopher 50 at Deer Creek Speedway with the World of Outlaws Late Models. The three-night event takes place from July 2-4.

The team wrote, “Derricks racing plans this week were supposed to be Wednesday at Oskaloosa & Saturday in Memphis Missouri. We will be taking this week off.. still addressing the situation on the car. (& we have friends getting married Saturday so we will be celebrating with them) HOWEVER we will be back in action next weekend at the Gopher 50 (my favorite race of the year 🤩).”

Additionally, it shared an update on his health, “He’s bruised up and sore but trust me, he’s still his tenacious self! There’s not much (besides a man cold) that can keep him down 😜.”
