Jonathan Davenport is not running with any specific tour whether it be a national one with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series or the World of Outlaws Late Models nor with any regional series likes Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series, Southern Nationals, or MLRA.
Halfway through the year, Davenport shared how it has been a double edged sword for he and his team. He spoke with DirtVision ahead of the World of Outlaws’ event at Ogilvie Raceway on Monday night, “That’s a double-edged sword. Because we don’t really have anything planned so we don’t know exactly what we’re doing week-to-week to most places.”
“As far as that we can always keep our equipment fresher, I feel like,” he shared. “We can go back to the shop when we need to. If something does go wrong, we don’t have to stay out on the road and continue to grind.”
On top of being able to keep his equipment fresher and not being committed to the grind of a tour, he’s also getting to visit tracks he’s never been to, “This whole trip up here from when we left the beautiful place there at Salina Highbanks, never been to there. The place was awesome. And we get to come here. Never been here. This whole trip all the way through Deer Creek is places I’ve never been before.”
He also relayed that being able to go to these new tracks allows he and his team to put his equipment to the test while also testing out different setups, “We feel like we should be able to compete anywhere we unload, but just going back to doing what we want to when we want to that was a brand new car that we had last week so we wanted to get out and maybe test some things with it at a different kind of race track and that way we are not in our same routine of doing the same thing. So then coming to [Ogilvie Raceway], it’s got a couple of reminders of other race tracks that I’ve been too, but it looks like it’s shaped really nice. It looks like it would be pretty racy. And obviously, I watch videos of where the Outlaws have been here before. It looked like it would race really wide and that’s definitely really good. That’s one reason why we wanted to come up here and check all this out. But feels like a nice facility, beautiful weather, so we’re ready to go.”

Ogilvie did end up being very racy especially the first 30 laps as Davenport dueled with Bobby Pierce for multiple laps about a quarter through the race. Unfortunately, on a restart Davenport clipped the outside wall of turn 2 and while it didn’t look like he hit the wall that hard his entire right rear came apart and his night was ended.
While he said not competing with the tour gives him to freshen up his equipment if he so chooses the team shared that they will repair the car and plan to be back in action on Wednesday when the Outlaws roll into I-94 emr Speedway.
Finally, another benefit of Davenport heading up north to places he’s never been is that he’s making new fans. Ricky Hogan shared in a comment on Facebook, “Never seen you race in person big fan tonight at ogilvie was hands down best racing I’ve seen in 30 yrs 49 and 32 going at it till your night ended awesome racing.”
Tj Jankowski also wrote, “Tough break but really appreciate you guys coming to northern MN to put on a show for us fans! Best of luck the rest of the stops up here!”
“Super awesome race, you would have totally won!!! Loved you guys came up to Ogilvie…really hope this isn’t the last time!!! Good luck in Fergus Falls, if you go through Battle Lake make sure to stop at Grannies Pantry for ice cream!” wrote Cassandra Olson.
Jon Padgett also shared, “Best race I have seen with you and 32 doing sliders. Sorry for the wall incident . See you at Fergus.”
Davenport has racked up 13 wins on his pick-and-choose schedule and anywhere he unloads he’s a threat to win. He most recently swept the weekend at Salina Highbanks with the MLRA series. He is tied with Hudson O’Neal for the second most wins for the year. Only Bobby Pierce is ahead of him with 17.
