Kyle Larson was the latest NASCAR Cup Series driver to appear on the Bussin’ With The Boys show hosted by NFL players Will Compton and Taylor Lewan and he was asked what his thoughts are on Carson Hocevar.
Larson said, “Hocever, honestly, I respect his talent. I think he’s extremely, extremely good and fast. I like his aggressiveness even, but I would say it goes overboard a lot of time.”
“For me, I don’t know, he’s young, but he’s even more immature than what his age is. I have his little Twitch stream thing pop up on my Instagram feed every now and then. I’m like, ‘Dude, this guy’s like an 8-year-old.’ That’s where I lose a little bit of respect ’cause I’m like, ‘Man, this guy’s supposed to be … could be the future of our sport and he’s acting like he’s 8 years old.”
“But, no, he’s phenomenal,” Larson added. “He outruns his teammates by a lot every week. He’s really good and he’s going to be around for a long time and going to win a lot of races. I think once he definitely harnesses himself some and kind of can dial back that aggression a little bit and manage a race better, I think he can win multiple races a year. And he’s close to that. He’s definitely gotten better over the last couple years.”
“I don’t know him that well. So maybe if I knew him a little bit better, I’d have more respect,” he concluded.
Larson is not the first one to express the idea that Hocevar needs to harness his aggression and improve his race management, Bubba Wallace expressed that sentiment following the Cup series race at Michigan, where Hocaver finished fifth.
Wallace told reporters, “He’s fast. He’s fast and he deserves to be in victory lane multiple times out of the year, but making mistakes is going to cost him. And he hasn’t realized that yet.”
“He’s playing the game,” Wallace added. “The point by, letting me and Larson by and the 43 by was nice, but doesn’t ease the pain. That’s what I told him. I don’t know if you’re doing that on purpose, but you’re having to do that ’cause like, ‘Oh man, I wrecked that guy earlier. I wrecked him last week. I got to-.’ Just stop hitting [crap]. You can race to your potential.”
Hocevar responded to Wallace’s comments on the Michigan pit road following the race when Motorsport.com reporter Matt Weaver asked him about it, “I get his point, perspective, and everything. I’m just racing really hard and there were times where I tried to make a move and get two spots when I probably should have just got one. And, yeah, cost me especially there almost wrecking myself in 3 and 4 there early in the race when I was next to him.”
Hocevar notched his first win in the NASCAR Cup Series this year at Talladega Superspeedway at the end of April. He also sits 9th in the Series Standings with 4 top 5s and 7 top 10s alongside the win. He was in the hunt for the win in a number of those races as well including earlier this month at Michigan where he ultimately settled for a fifth place finish and back at the end of March at Darlington, where he drove from the rear to finish fourth. He is also only 1 of 2 drivers in the top 10 that do not have a DNF. The other driver is Denny Hamlin.
The NASCAR Cup Series is back in action this weekend at Sonoma Raceway for the Toyota/Save Mart 350. Coverage begins on TNT Sports at 3:30 p.m.
