Casey Roberts, of Toccoa, Georgia, came out on top of round seven of the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco Race Fuels on Thursday at Sugar Creek Raceway! After rain showers delayed the action, Casey laid down the second quickest time in Group B during the qualifying session to earn the fourth starting spot for the 40-lap main event. He traded the second position with Joseph Joiner during the first half of the contest before passing race-long leader Cody Overton for the point on lap 29 – just before Overton went spinning with a flat left rear tire.
Once out front, Casey led the rest of the distance to capture his fourteenth career Southern Nationals Series victory and the $7,553 winner’s check. Finishing 0.579 of a second back at the unfurling of the checkered flag was runner-up Joseph Joiner, of Milton, Florida. Series point leader Donald McIntosh, who started seventh on the grid, vaulted past four competitors to land on the podium in third. Leading Rookie of the Year contender Allen Styck recorded an impressive fourth place effort, while Dillard Hatchett improved five spots to grab the final position inside of the top five at the Blue Ridge, Georgia oval.
“I don’t think we had anything for Cody (Overton), he was really good,” Roberts said in Schaeffer’s Oil victory lane. “I noticed we started coming to him there and I didn’t know if his tire was going down or what. But anyway, he was pretty good there. I had a good car too, so I have to thank my car owner Gus Simpson and everyone that is a part of our team!”
Casey Roberts steered a #101 Longhorn Chassis powered by a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship in part from Simpson’s Trucking & Grading, Ralph Grizzle Trucking, Atlanta Paving & Concrete Construction, Cantrell Forest Products, B&M Metals, R&B Mechanical, Sold Auction Company, Elrod Trucking, Ohlins Shocks, and A+ Signs.
With the rain-out of Friday’s $10,053 to win show at North Georgia Speedway, the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco Race Fuels shifts its focus to the point finale on Saturday, July 25 at the bad-fast Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tennessee. A champion will be crowned on Saturday at “The Taz” and a $10,053 payday will be up for grabs for both the race winner and the series champ. More information on Tazewell Speedway can be found online by clicking on www.tazewellspeedway.net.
Donald McIntosh sits atop of the latest Southern Nationals Series point standings over Joseph Joiner, but with the drop, Cody Overton joins the mix to make it an interesting battle for the championship on Saturday at Tazewell Speedway. As it sits now with each driver’s worst race dropped, McIntosh leads by 10 markers over Joiner and Overton, who are tied for the second spot. Allen Styck has a firm grip on Rookie of the Year honors heading into the tour finale.
