Alex Bowman recently shared what his racing plans will be after he retires from NASCAR and he made it clear that a return to Sprint Car racing is on the list.
Back in July, Hendrick Motorsports and Bowman announced his retirement would take place following the 2027 season. At the time, Bowman said, ““I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what’s next, and this feels like the right decision at the right time. The sport asks a lot of you, and I’ve learned it’s important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself. To say I’m incredibly grateful to Mr. Hendrick, our partners at Ally and Chevrolet, and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports would be an understatement. They believed in me and gave me the biggest opportunity of my life.”
“My focus now is on making the most of my time on the racetrack and competing for wins. We still have a lot to accomplish, and I want to close my career on a high note for our team and our fans. To have the chance to do that with this organization and these people is really special.”

Bowman shared more details on what his racing plans will look like after his retirement noting he plans to prioritize drifting and a return to Sprint Car racing.
He told Kevin Harvick and Will Buxton on their SPEED show, “I think the drift car is the biggest thing. We’ve kind of geared up to start looking at competing a little bit in 2028 and trying to get a bunch of seat time before that. Looking forward to that.”
When pressed on what that looks like, Bowman made clear he has no intention of competing in Formula DRIFT, “I don’t want to do that ’cause I feel like I will turn that into a job. Like I’m so competitive, I will make it a job if I try to jump in the deep end. And there’s some licensing stuff. I don’t have any business jumping in the deep end of that. I would like to run some Pro-Am stuff in 2028 and see how it goes and kind of go from there. So we’ve been testing a little bit already and trying to get the car to more of a competition car type deal.”
He then shared that he plans to return to Sprint Car racing, “I would like to get back in a Winged Sprint Car. I’m going to fight Chloe on that one. She’s not happy about me wanting to do that. Especially with how the last time I drove one went.”
“Really just want to drive things that are fun and enjoyable to drive without the everyday microscope pressure that is the Cup Series. Cup racing can be really fun when things are going really well, but when things aren’t going well, it is tough. Kind of going racing without the pressure and getting to drive fun stuff is kind of what I’m looking for.”
Bowman stepped away from Sprint Car racing after he injured his back during a High Limit race at 34 Raceway in April 2023.

In an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio in December 2023, he shared that he would not be back in a Sprint Car for the foreseeable future, but was interested in competing with the World of Outlaws when his NASCAR career was over, “I won’t be in a Winged Sprint Car for the foreseeable future. I would say when I’m done Cup racing, I would love to do the Outlaw tour. It’s just going to be something that I’m going to push off until I’m at that point in my life where it’s what I want to do and it’s not going to take away from anything else.”
