In the opening laps of the Hawkeye 100 main event at Maquoketa Speedway with the World of Outlaws Late Models Nick Hoffman experienced his first roll over in a Super Dirt Late Model.
On lap three of the feature, Hoffman collided with a spinning Tyler Erb and Clay Stuckey and eventually went tumbling and landed on his lid alongside Erb.
Hoffman exited his car, checked on the status of his fellow competitors, and then immediately began barking instructions to his team to prepare them to begin to work on the car and get it back on the track.
Dustin Sorensen, who was also involved in the wreck, shared his perspective on what happened with DIRTVision’s Hunter Jordan, “Somebody got sideway there. I don’t know who it was, but obviously I got into-. Well, I was on the brakes hard and I don’t think I would’ve got into Nick that hard, but I got hit from behind. But you can’t really see what’s going on in front of you at the start of the race like that. Just everybody’s bumper to tail.”
“Just sucks to happen that early in the race,” he added. Sorensen did not return to the race and finished in 24th.
Hoffman shared his perspective following the race with Always Race Day, “That was the slowest rollover I’ve ever had. I’ve never flipped a big car before. I’ve flipped quarter midgets and Outlaw Karts. First fender car flip. I flipped midgets. I’ve flipped Outlaw Karts and all kinds of [crap], but I haven’t flipped one of these yet. So there’s a first for everything. So I feel like after this week I should probably just wear my helmet all the [freaking] time. It’s just been really [crappy]. Had a pretty rough week. We salvaged decent finishes, but just frustrating.”
“Stuff like that, you just get mired back there, don’t qualify great, didn’t heat race well. And then won my B and started back there,” he continued. “It’s just a racing deal. Stuckey went into three and Tyler was basically right against his quarter panel and they make contact and then Tyler has to almost to stop to try to get out of Stuckey. And we’re just logjammed from there. I run into him. Then I felt like I was going to be fine then I got run into and then I slowly look out my right side and see him starting to tip and then at the same time I’m starting to go too. It was pretty wild.”
“I flip over and then laying upside down, never been in that situation. Everybody says you can’t get out when you’re upside down, but I’m like, ‘I’m going to find a way out of this son of a [gun]. Unbuckled my belts first. … I knew I needed to hold myself up. I unbuckled my belts and I realized like I can’t get out with my helmet on. So then I ripped my helmet off, threw it out, and then I could get out pretty easy. Then just make sure Tyler was alright.”
“I was just worried about fuel leaking or whatever. That’s your biggest fear in that situation,” he said. “So I’m getting the hell out of this thing.”
After explaining what happened and how he got out of the car, he shared that he made some adjustments while the car was flipped over, “Couple front T-bars were bent down, was able to step on them while it was upside down and bend them back out.”
Additionally, he shared, “I made a setup adjustment while I was upside down. I knew I was going to be able to get back out there. I felt like those first couple laps I didn’t have enough right rear load in and my right rear was dipping really bad. So I just crawled in there, cranked a couple turns in the right rear while I was upside down and then got to them guys and they were able to fix it. … I just knew what I was going to need later in the race if I was going to be able to get out there. Made a couple adjustments and it drove decent. It didn’t hinder my performance. If I wouldn’t have flipped over I probably would have finished in the same spot.”
Hoffman was able to rally from the flip to finish in 9th. However, he continued to lose ground in the World of Outlaws Late Models Championship Standings. He is now 113 points behind Bobby Pierce, who dominated the race.
He recapped his night on a post to X, “💩 week. Buried myself last night. Started 18th. Got wadded up and flipped over. Everyone in the infield was able to get my car put back together and we went from the rear back to 9th.”
