At the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show at Indianapolis this past weekend, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) dominated headlines by announcing a number of acquisitions including F1 Powerboat Racing and Maple Grove Raceway.

The organization had previously announced its acquisition of the World Drag Racing Alliance and the creation of the IHRA Stock Car Series at the end of November. It will also be getting its toes wet and dirty by announcing an intention to get involved in dirt racing.

Speed Sport, which broadcasts all IHRA racing including its Outlaw Nitro Series drag racing, the aforementioned Stock Car Series, Offshore Powerboat Racing, and Outlaw Drag Boats among others, reported that IHRA plans to get involved in the dirt track racing business.

IHRA President Leah Martin told the outlet, “We have had a ton of interest here at PRI and the guys keep coming to me, so I pulled Darryl [Cuttell, IHRA owner] aside and asked if he was ready to do this. He committed, so here we go.”

As for what that commitment will look like, Martin said, “We will get some more information out within the next couple of weeks.”

Cuttell is the President and CEO of Darana Hybrid, Inc. He purchased the IHRA, which predominantly sanctioned drag racing, in late 2024 and has moved to significantly expand the organization into various forms of motorsports in the year since purchasing it. Not only did he purchase the organization, but he’s also purchased a number of tracks including the aforementioned Maple Grove Raceway, Piedmont Dragway, and Darana Raceway.

It is quite possible he could form a new dirt racing sanctioning body as well as purchase a couple of tracks given his brief history and track record with the IHRA.
