Bobby Pierce reacted to Saturday night’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature at Golden Isles Speedway by declaring it “example number 1 of how it’s the best racing on earth.”

Pierce shared his thoughts on X. He wrote, “Tonight’s Late Model race is example number 1 of how it’s the best racing on earth (when the race track is good & the racing happens to be better)”

He added, “Other forms of Motorsport come close but they arguably don’t have the lap after lap drama & raw entertainment like that.”

Pierce is not overstating how good the race was. It was excellent and was definitely the race of the year so far.

The night started out with regional standout Mark Whitener jumping to the lead and then had its first wild wreck when Blair Nothdurft lost a wheel and slammed hard into the outside wall. The wheel bounced over the wall and somehow missed a number of parked vehicles before hitting a trash barrel and coming to a stop.

Once they got going green, the on-track racing was phenomenal as Trey Mills motored his way on the high side from seventh to second working his way past the likes of Brandon Sheppard, Ricky Thornton Jr., and Brandon Overton.

It did not let up the entire race as there would be great battles especially for the second, third, fourth, and fifth positions throughout the night. Mills eventually tracked down Whitener and the two crossed each other over a couple of times as they jockeyed for the lead.

The intensity really picked up following a late race caution for Dennis Erb Jr. That allowed Hudson O’Neal, who had worked his way up from 19th to 3rd. On the restart, O’Neal worked past both Overton and Mills through turns 1 and 2. But Mills battled back with a crossover. And an epic duel between the two began as they traded sliders for the next few laps. And while all that was happening, Max Blair worked his way up to third from dead last and was even poking his nose in the battle for the lead. And he wasn’t alone. Devin Moran, who started in 22nd, was right behind him in 4th.

However, the show was definitely the battle between Mills and O’Neal as they threw haymakers at each other for 4 laps. And just when it looked like Trey Mills had finally cleared him, he made a slight error coming out of turn 2 and slammed hard into the wall. O’Neal had nowhere to go and hip checked him sending Mills’ car flipping up and over the wall.

Mills explained, “I was going for the biggest race in my career. I was giving Hudson everything he had and I just drove it in too deep and got into the fence. I don’t know. Somebody hit me from behind and it just went over. But my car was just so good. I just hate it for my guys. I feel like I should have won that race and I didn’t.”

Not only would Mills be done, but so was O’Neal, who suffered significant damage. That put Max Blair to the lead and the possibility of him winning from dead last. However, Devin Moran had other ideas. With 4 laps left, Moran dove to the inside of Blair going into turn 3. The two made contact, but Moran cleared him exiting turn 4 and he never looked back to take home the win.
