Chris Ferguson had another solid top 10 run going with the World of Outlaws Late Models at East Alabama Speedway for the inaugural Chattahoochee Clash on Friday night, but it all went awry.

Eight laps into the race, Sam Seawright was able to work his way around Ferguson for the ninth place. After Seawright completed the pass, white smoke was seen coming out from underneath Ferguson’s car.

Ferguson would continue to run in the 10th position for another five laps, but would eventually bring out the caution on lap 13 when he slowed and the white smoke was heavily billowing out of the car. After bringing the car into the hot pit, a fire could be seen underneath the car’s hood.

Ferguson explained in a post to Facebook what went wrong, “Unfortunately, we started to smell oil and saw some smoke tonight, so we had to pull in while battling inside the top 10.”

“Our Live Oak Aesthetic and Family Dentistry hot rod was really starting to come into its own,” he added. “We took a more aggressive approach with the tires to set ourselves up for the long run, but unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to see how it would play out.”

“We’re not sure about the condition of the motor yet, but we’ll keep everyone updated tomorrow for Senoia Raceway. We think it was just an oil leak,” he concluded. “As always, thank you to God, my wife, family, crew, sponsors, and fans for believing in us.”

The DNF ended Ferguson’s top 10 streak he had going with the World of Outlaws Late Models. While he did not compete with the series when it went to Magnolia Motor SPeedway on March 20th and 21st, he was with the tour when it rolled into Tennessee earlier this month first at Volunteer Speedway and then at Smoky Mountain Speedway. Ferguson brought it home 7th in both races and showed significant speed and racecraft at Volunteer as he was able to navigate from 14th to get the 7th place finish.

It is the second DNF in a row for Ferguson in as many races. At Cherokee Speedway with the Southern All Stars and Spring Nationals he suffered a transmission issue. Ferguson told Stock Car Report at the time, “Broke a transmission.”
