Cody Overton thought his Speedweeks were over after he suffered two engine failures in practice last night, but his team is now hard at work preparing his car to compete with the World of Outlaws at Volusia Speedway Park tomorrow night after seemingly getting a new engine.
Ahead of tonight’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series opener, Overton shared that his Speedweeks were over before they even started. The reason being is that both of his motors failed during practice at the track on Wednesday night.
Overton posted to Facebook, “Racing can be cruel sometimes. Unfortunately, our Speedweeks are over before they truly began after failures in both of our motors last night.”
“We’ll take a few weeks to regroup, reset, and get ready for the next chapter. This team doesn’t quit,” he concluded.
However, things changed throughout the night and he was able to get an engine. Overton shared an update with a photo of his team working on the car. He wrote, “Blessed. See y’all tomorrow night”
Overton enters the 2026 season in a new role as both owner and driver for Cody Overton Racing. It also marks his third year with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. After strong performances in prior seasons, including a third-place finish in the 2025 Volusia opener that briefly put him atop the points standings, Overton is looking to get that first elusive Series victory.
The DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals at Volusia continues with a full program on Friday night with $12,000 to win on the line. On Saturday, the purse increases to $20,000.
With 44 cars entered for the Thursday opener, competition will be fierce on the half-mile oval known as the “World’s Fastest Half Mile.” Overton’s ability to adapt quickly could pay dividends, especially given his history of running well at Volusia. As the green flag drops tomorrow night, all eyes will be on whether “Lil Sexy” can channel this adversity into a top finish and set the tone for his owner-driver campaign.
