Cory Hedgecock revealed he will no longer be competing full-time with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series after competing his family-owned equipment with the World of Outlaws at Volunteer Speedway and Smoky Mountain Speedway this past weekend.
Hedgecock split with Billy Hicks Racing at Golden Isles Speedway and competed with Bruce Kane for two races. He arrived at Volunteer Speedway in his own equipment and finished 11th. At Smoky Mountain he finished 26th.
Ahead of the Smoky Mountain race, Hedgecock shared more details on his split with Billy Hicks, “Simplistic answer is that it just wasn’t working out. Thankful that he did give me a chance there for a little bit.”
“I’m just really happy to be in my own stuff and just really-. Racing feels different now for some reason, at least for me” he continued. “It just don’t mean as much to me anymore and if it ain’t going smooth it’s just not worth me being at the racetrack. We’ll get better. We’ll be fine. We’ll be fast. We’ve just got to kind of get everything back in motion and just get everybody’s head’s back straight on toward my own program. We’ll be fine. … We’ll be better the next week and we’ll be better the following week. So we just got to get everybody back in the groove.”
He then shared that he won’t be following the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series full time, “No, no. Like I said, it just don’t mean that much to me anymore. We’ll just pick and choose this year. We’ll run some red coat stuff and maybe run some Southern Nationals. That’d be the only points related thing that we’ll run.”
“We’ll go to the first couple Hunt the Front races and if we’re leading the points then okay we’ll prob going to the next one and then the next one and the following. But if I’m running fair and I’m fifth or sixth in points and they’re going to go to a place that I’m not really looking forward to going to go to a place that I’m not really looking forward to going, I’m just not going to go. The way me and Dad kinda talked is we will not go anywhere that me and him both agree on that we think we can run good and want to be at. And if that’s not the case then we just simply won’t go. So that’s kind of our game plan this year. We’ll see how that works out.”
He went on to share that he will be at the Talladega Short Track to kick off the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series, “We’ll go there and we’ll see what we got and go from there.”
