Shane McDowell Racing announced that the team’s driver Dale McDowell underwent successful cataract surgery at the end of February and is planning to return to racing action with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series when it gets back in action this month.
Back in the middle of February, Kevin Kovac at DirtonDirt.com reported that McDowell would not compete in the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park because he was “experiencing problems with his vision in one eye.” The plan was for Dale to undergo cataract surgery on February 25th to correct it.
Shane McDowell Racing shared on Facebook that the surgery was a success and that Dale and the team will be back on track with the World of Outlaws Late Models when they arrive in Tennessee later this month. The team posted, “Dale had successful cataract surgery yesterday and we look forward to getting back on track March 13th [at] Volunteer Speedway & 14th [at] Smoky Mountain Speedway.”
Additionally, the team shared that it has a ton of new merchandise on sale including T-shirts, sweatshirts, coozies, hats, diecasts and even a flag.
McDowell is no stranger to Volunteer Speedway. He’s had quite a bit of success at the track in the past. He won the XR Super Series Spring Thaw 100 in 2023. He led every single lap and took home the $100,000 paycheck. Additionally he captured the Volunteer 50 in 2024 winning $50,050. Two weeks after that win he took home the Southern Nationals Summer Sizzler win at the track.
He’s also been very good at Smoky Mountain Speedway. Just last year he won the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series King of the Mountain race at the the track besting Jimmy Owens and Zack Mitchell. In 2024 he finished third during the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Moonshine Classic. He had previously won the event in 2016. In 2021 he won his 45th Southern All Star Series King of the Mountain race at the track. He won with the World of Outlaws Late Models at the track in 2018 as well.
