Trackhouse Racing driver Daniel Suarez shared an update on his contract negotiations with the team for the future revealing “there are still a lot of things in the air.”
Suarez has been with Trackhouse since the team made its debut in 2021. Last August he signed a one-year contract extension to stay with the team. Following the deal, Suarez announced, “Trackhouse is home to me and I have enjoyed every minute I have been here. We plan to keep working, growing and winning more races. We can only do that with the support of my Amigos and Amigas at Freeway Insurance. They have backed me for the last several years and we have grown close with their customers and employees.”
Given, it was just a one-year extension, Suarez is in a contract year. In a recent interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Suarez was asked about his current contract negations and what his mentality and attitude is heading into Atlanta, where he’s in a must win situation. Suarez answered, “A lot of things have happened in the last ten months or so. I love Trackhouse. This is my home. And I’m forever thankful for everything that Justin [Marks] and Trackhouse, and Ty Norris at the time, and a lot of people have done to build this amazing place. Lately, it’s been a little bit of a struggle. Not just on the track, but also off the track in a few things. And, right now we are in a must win situation. We are in a must win situation.
“The good thing about that is that we have good racetracks for us. Atlanta is coming up. We have road courses coming up. Chicago we have been very strong. Mexico City that also was obviously circled. I believe that in Mexico City we were a top five to a top ten car if things were playing out our way. So we just have to execute a good race when we have the right car to win the race,” he continued. “Because you know how it is, you have a winning car five times and you win two races. Sometimes things go your way and sometimes don’t. And we have to make sure that we can control everything that we can. And that’s all we can do.”
“I’m very focused on the next task. That right now is Atlanta and see what happens. I’m happy and I’m comfortable where I am. Definitely, I want more. I want to be winning races. But I have confidence in my group, in the 99 [team] that we have what it takes to get it done,” Suarez added.
When asked about negotiations with Trackhouse about a new contract, Suarez shared, “I would say it’s not going to be soon, soon, but it’s going to maybe be in a couple months, few months. We’ll see what happens. There’s still a lot of things in the air right now. There is just something that I’m just a little bit uncomfortable in a few areas, in a few things. The way that a few things that have been handled. But, like I said, I love Trackhouse and I love this team. And this team for me has been my best home in the Cup series. And I want to have more success with this team. And I want to see this team successful regardless of if I’m in it or not.”
“But we’ll see what happens,” he continued. “Right now, honestly, everything is an option. I think there is a lot of things that, honestly, I don’t even know the answer. All I know is that things are going to work out. They always do. I’m working very, very hard. The team is doing their job. The 99 Team and what an amazing group I have. My crew chief, mechanics, my pit crew, I have an amazing group. We’ll see what happens. There is still a lot of things in the air and I hope that everything works out in a way that everyone is happy.”
Suarez is currently 27th in the NASCAR Cup Series points standings. He’s currently 87 points behind Ryan Preece, who currently sits in the 16th and final playoff position. He has an average finish of 20.6 Since he’s been with Trackhouse, Suarez has gotten two wins, 15 top 5s, and 39 top 10s. However, his performance this year has been one of his worst years with the team as he’s only had 1 top 5 and 3 top 10s. Last year, he had 1 win, 4 top 5s, and 9 top 10s and an average finish of 17.9 In 2023, he had 3 top 5s, 10 top 10s, and an average finish of 19th. In 2022, he had 1 win, 6 top 5s, 13 top 10s, and an average finish of 16.5.
