Hudson O’Neal came up one spot short during the finale of the World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
With about 18 laps left in the 50 lap feature, O’Neal was able to run down Jonathan Davenport as the two were weaving through lap traffic. O’Neal dove to the in side of Davenport and was able to beat him to the line and take the lead. However, Davenport encountered as the two attempted to lap Bobby Pierce. As they both navigated around Pierce, Davenport dove to the inside and was able to reclaim the lead.
O’Neal wasn’t done as he slid Davenport through 1 and 2 and retook it. And it looked like he was going to run away with it. However, Davenport had some something to say about that. With 6 laps to go, Davenport made a move to the inside and slid O’Neal took to the lead and he never looked back bringing home the win.
StockCarReport.com spoke with Hudson O’Neal following the race about what he needed to keep Davenport behind him, “I don’t know how you can ask for much better of a race. It was really a lot of fund behind the wheel and two guys racing really clean and really hard. That’s the best feeling in the world whenever you can compete in a race like that. Obviously, we’d like to have come home one spot better, but we have a really good race car. This Kevin Rumley No. 6 car, it’s been spot on all weekend.”
“Had a little bit of an off night last night with a little bit of a wrong tire choice, but other than that this thing was really good all weekend and we showed it right there,” he continued. “Jonathan [Davenport] is so good when the race track gets like that and he proved that last night. So to be able to run with him and make the pass on him there in lap traffic. Let him back by, but at the end of the day I don’t know that-. Obviously, hindsight’s 2020, maybe I could have done this, maybe I could have done that, but that’s just the nature of the lap traffic, and racing hard. It made for an exciting show for the fans, I’m sure.”
O’Neal also spoke about how he biked up in turn 1 about 10 laps into the feature and how it might have hurt the drive shaft, but didn’t affect the performance of the car, “I got in that whole getting into turn one pretty bad a couple times. … I started to get a vibration, a decel vibration. It didn’t affect me any racing at all. … It had zero effect on my racing ability. Just trying to make sure Kevin knew that. That way going back to the shop he can know what to look for.”
“This thing held up really good,” he added. “I was kind of demanding on it there at times in the cushion, but this Cornett motor ran awesome.”
