Jeb Burton shared his frustrations regarding Sam Mayer and his hopes that NASCAR will punish him after Mayer wrecked him following the conclusion of the Martinsville Xfinity race.
Burton and Mayer’s feud goes back to last week’s race at Talladega where Mayer blamed Burton for causing a wreck that he got caught up in and ended up putting him below the playoff cut line heading into Martinsville.
“He caused a 20-car pileup at Talladega, which put us in the spot we were in going into today, so it was his fault to begin with,” said Mayer after the Martinsville race. “Him left-hooking the 20 car [Jones] in the middle of the trioval of Talladega is just an absolutely silly thing to have happen. And me getting caught up in it sucks.”
That frustration boiled over during the Martinsville race when Mayer shipped Burton up the track on a restart. Burton made a strategy play to stay out and start on the outside at the end of stage one. Mayer started behind him and as soon as the green flag dropped he got into his rear and sent him up the track and back to about 20th.

Burton was not happy about it. Reporter Noah Lewis reported that Burton said over the radio, “Tell the 41 that he’s done when I get to him. (Expletive) him and his championship (expletive). He’s done. Done!”
“Tell the 41 that he’s done when I get to him. F*ck him and his championship bullshit. He’s done. Done!”

He eventually enacted some payback during NASCAR Overtime. As can be seen above, Burton gave Mayer a shot to the rear and moved him to the outside lane. He then dove under him and was able to get past him and secure a sixth place finish.
Following the finish, Mayer retaliated and spun Burton’s car out sending not only him into the outside wall, but his own car. As he came off the wall, he then ran over Burton’s front end.
After both drivers got back to pit road, they unloaded on each other to the media. Burton said, “I think Sam was mad that last week he got taken out in an accident at Talladega. And he was acting like a child like Sam is.”
He then recounted all of the drama with Mayer, “We were on old tires at the end of stage 1, I believe, and he shipped me out of the way — I think we all saw that, I was on the front of row — for no reason. I’ve always raced Sam really clean. Never really had a problem with him.”
“I moved him at the end for a spot because I was still pissed off at what he did. Because when he moved me I went back to 20th. And it really almost ruined our day because we got off strategy. So that was frustrating. That’s why I moved him back. I didn’t wreck him, just moved him,” he said. “And then at the end of the race after the checker, he destroyed our car and wrecked us. So hopefully NASCAR does something because he literally right reared me into the outside wall.”
“I race a lot of people out here with respect and I just want it back. And he ran over me for no reason so I gave it back to him. And he threw a temper tantrum. So it is what it is,” he added.
When asked if he hoped to get a chance to talk to him, Burton said, “Oh, I would love to talk to him. I would love. But it wouldn’t be much talking now.”
Finally, he threatened, “When it matters the most for him, he’s in a really good car, it’s not going to work out very well for him. … The way he acts, he’s a punk. And I think everybody knows it.”

As for Mayer he told the media after the race, “He’s raced everybody in the playoffs like-. He’s the worst person to race around in the entire garage. And he has a reputation of being over his head every single week. And this was a prime example of it. He just can’t take no for an answer. And a guy with a purple spoiler racing for something huge moved him out of the way and went on and was faster than him in the end. And as soon as he got back to me he gave it the beans and freaking tried to wreck me three corners in a row. And thank God I have enough car control where I can hold on to it and not wreck.”
“But, yeah, he has no respect for someone racing for something bigger than what he is. What is he like 35th in points? And I don’t know what he’s trying to do. It’s awful.”
When asked what happened between him and Burton’s car owner Jordan Anderson, Mayer said, “In all honesty, I feel so bad for Jordan. I regret my move after the race. Jordan’s an awesome guy. He’s worked his tail off to get to where he is. … And I hate that I destroyed one of his race cars tonight, but his driver destroyed 20 last week. It’s a principle thing. You’ve just got to tell your drivers what’s going on. And when you’re not in the playoffs and you’re just trying to have a good day — this is the best Jeb’s run I think in his career and he decides to just be over his head the whole time. So he’s just to reign that guy in. Jeb just doesn’t have the it factor. And I hate it for Jordan to have to do deal with that.”
After being informed that Burton implied he wanted to fight him, he said “That brother does not have the it factor, he has the (expletive) factor. And it’s just part of it.”
As for whether he’s expecting a penalty, he said, “Nah. It’s self-policing, I think. So we’re good.”
