Jonathan Davenport appeared to rack up another second place finish during the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race at Muskingum County Speedway, but he was disqualified after failing tech.
After a post-race interview with Hudson O’Neal, FloRacing announcer Dustin Jarret announced that Davenport had been disqualified saying, “Droop limiter breaks on the 49 of Jonathan Davenport and that reshuffles the final running order.”
Speaking with FloRacing’s Kyle McFadden following the race, Davenport explained what happened, “Our chain wasn’t tight when we went to check our droop. Our deck height passed, but our chain wasn’t tight. So it actually passed by a lot ’cause we had less droop.”
“So what had happened was- basically, you have an underslung bar and you have a rear end housing and you have an axle tube that connects to the bail. Well, where it connects, you have bolts, you have four sets of bolts around it,” he continued. “And the one bolt on the bottom backed out and started hitting the underslung. So basically I had less droop, but it made the chain not be tight.”
“I don’t even see how it stayed in there because it was so long. It was probably a half-inch bolt, I would say, and it was backed all the way out. And it was just enough to make the chain not really tight. It was dangling, but it wasn’t tight. So just s**t luck. That’s the way it goes.”
He went on to reveal that he could tell something had changed with the car during the race, “I could tell something was wrong on my car. The first part of the race I was really, really good. I’m not going to elaborate on what I felt. That changed. It was definitely different. It was odd. It felt odd.”
“We run up on lap traffic there,” he added. “Our car was still pretty good, but just got passed by Hudson. Congrats to him. He done a good job. Couldn’t get to him.”
When McFadden speculated that this failure was out of his control, Davenport concurred, “Yeah. All of us out here, we work with 16th packers, 8th inch packers. It’s all a just a game of not inches, it’s a game of 8ths and 16ths. When something like that changes a half inch it totally changes the car. We can hit wheels and knock an 1/8″ of toe our or a 1/4″ toe in and our car really changes quite a bit. So, yeah, just one of those things that happens. And we’ll write that down and we’ll make sure it never happens again.”
With the disqualification, Davenport saw his brief points lead over Ricky Thornton after Atomic evaporate. Instead of expanding on his 55 point lead, he now finds himself 20 points behind Thornton.
