Justin Allgaier exchanged words with Sam Mayer following the race at Martinsville and recently shared why he was upset with him.
Speaking to Fox Sports insider Bob Pockrass, Allgaier was asked, “Were you mad at Sam Mayer for something he did to you or were you mad at what he did to Jeb [Burton]?”
Towards the end of stage one, Mayer sent Burton up the track on a restart and cost him a number of positions. Burton was not happy about and eventually gave it back to him at the end of the race giving him a hard shot in the rear, which moved him up the track and allowed him to take the sixth position from him. Mayer then retaliated against him following the conclusion of the race by wrecking him and sending him spinning into the outside wall and then running over his front end. NASCAR suspended Mayer for this weekend’s upcoming race at Phoenix for the retaliation after the checkers.

As for Allgaier, he answered, “It started with me and then I had 60 laps to watch everything else that transpired. Look, Sam and I have had a good relationship. I feel like as drivers go away from JR Motorsports I still feel responsible as they grow into the drivers that they’re going to be. I want to see them succeed. I hold the drivers that lead JR Motorsports to a probably higher standard then maybe somebody else that’s in the sport because I know what the expectations are at our shop and I know what they’re taught. I know who they have become and where they’re good and the things that they excel at.”
“And I thought Sam didn’t do a great job the other night,” he continued. “And he has his own opinion of it, but I just felt like I hold him to a little bit higher standard. So yeah I was upset. I was upset because it affected our night. It put us in a really bad spot and tore our race car up that didn’t need to get torn up.”
“I’m disappointed that it culminated into what it did and then he got suspended. I don’t want to see that. I don’t want any driver to have to go through that. I just felt like that we all owe it to each to hold each other accountable when guys aren’t doing things the right way. That was my conversation with him,” he concluded.
Justin Allgaier yelled at Sam Mayer after the race last week at Martinsville and I was curious if it was something Mayer did to Allgaier or if it was over the Jeb Burton incident. Allgaier’s thoughts on the former JR Motorsports driver: @NASCARONFOX pic.twitter.com/cNvH6ocIhd
