Late model stock car driver Landon Pembelton shared that he was 100% physically healthy after his car erupted into an inferno during the running of the first stop in the Virginia Triple Crown at South Boston Speedway.

With 86 laps to go in the event, Pembelton’s car erupted in fire as he was going through turn 4. Fortunately, the fire suppression system in the car immediately kicked in and took out the fire. After the car came to an initial stop, Pembelton began to exit it. However, once he got halfway out the car made a sharp left turn and rolled down the banking into the inside retaining wall and water barrels. Once it came to a stop Pembelton finished exiting the vehicle.

Pembelton spoke with FloRacing after exiting his vehicle and informed them he was fine and uninjured. He also shared that he had no warning that his car would erupt into a fireball, “Well, the motor started going flat around lap 75 … kinda looked it over. Then when we came in it stalled, changed the battery. Just nothing helped. It was just kind of all of a sudden. Within two laps it just got extremely flat and no indication at all. I just thought the alternator was going bad, but ended up blowing up.”

“But I can’t thank everyone [enough] at R&S,” he continued. “We’ve had some fast racecars these last couple weeks and we’re going to keep on working at it. This car is mighty fast. It’s going to be better.”

When asked if he was physically okay, he replied, “100%.”

Pembelton is currently third in the race for the South Boston Speedway track championship. He sits just three points behind current leader Trevor Ward and two points behind second place Peyton Sellers. Weekly racing action won’t return to South Boston until July 26th.

However, the Virginia Triple Crown’s next heads to Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway on July 19th. It closes out at Martinsville Speedway for the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 on September 27th.
