A NASCAR fan stole Ross Chastain’s hat as he was attempting to locate victory lane after he won the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night.
CBS Sports reporter Steven Taranto reported on X, “An unruly fan tried to steal a hat from Ross Chastain as he was driving to Victory Lane and Justin Marks was leaning in the window. Ross wasn’t happy about it.”
He added, “The individual in question has been dealt with by security.”

He later shared a video from Chastain’s in-car camera where you can hear Chastain celebrating the win while he came to a stop on pit lane. Chastain can be heard saying, “Hey, how do we go to Victory Lane?” After he seemingly gets instructions he says, “Okay, let’s go” and fires the engine of his car back up. Almost immediately after firing his engine, Chastain shouts, “Hey! Give it back!” A man is then seen in a blue sweatshirt jogging away from his car with Chastain’s hat on his head.
Chastain then kills the engine and yells, “Stop! Hey, Hey! Give me that hat back! Give me that f***ing hat back!” Less than 30 seconds later and it appears NASCAR security was able to retrieve his hat. Someone can be heard asking Ross, “Hey, you want that back on?”

Chastain would address the theft and provide more details on it while addressing the media following the race. First, he confirmed he was able to get the hat back, “I did. I did. Yes. I believe this is the hat. Yeah, I did. That was unfortunate. A guy was on pit road, he was super excited. He reached in. I high-fived him. I didn’t know him. And he just grabbed my head. And I thought, ‘Oh, he’s just saying good job, buddy!’ And then he just pulled the hat. And then he did this little dance and he said, ‘I got your hat. I got your hat.’ I was like, ‘No, give it back.’ And he ran away. I just shut the car off. I point and then NASCAR security and [Trackhouse Racing’s Chief Operating Officer] Tony Lunders was there and the security group.”
“That was my winning hat,” Chastain continued. “It rode in the car. So every week, every race car I ever drive I set the hat-. I have to have a hat with the hole in it so that I can put it on the shifter and it rides on the transmission tunnel every week, every race. So that’s the hat and I’ll put that on the shelf. It means a lot to me and I’m not going to give that away.”
He concluded saying that the thief “knew what he was doing and he grabbed it off of my head kind of like that.”
Ross Chastain said that when the guy who leaned into his window grabbed his head, he thought he was just saying good job in an excited way. But then he took his hat off his head, did a dance and said “I got your hat! I got your hat!”, and ran away.
