NASCAR announced that it suspended HAAS Factory Team driver Sam Mayer after he wrecked Jeb Burton and his Jordan Anderson car following the checkered flag on Saturday’s race at Martinsville Speedway.

Following the checkers, Mayer spun Burton’s car out sending not only him into the outside wall, but his own car. As he came off the wall, he then ran over Burton’s front end.

In a blog post, NASCAR stated that it “deemed the on-track maneuver from Mayer to be in violation of Section 4.4.B of the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct. He’s at least been suspended from the Xfinity Series championship race at Phoenix Raceway.

Following the race, Mayer believed he would not be suspended telling members of the media, “Nah. It’s self-policing, I think. So we’re good.”

While Mayer thought he would not be punished, Burton hoped that NASCAR would punish him, “I moved him at the end for a spot because I was still pissed off at what he did. Because when he moved me I went back to 20th. And it really almost ruined our day because we got off strategy. So that was frustrating. That’s why I moved him back. I didn’t wreck him, just moved him,” he said. “And then at the end of the race after the checker, he destroyed our car and wrecked us. So hopefully NASCAR does something because he literally right reared me into the outside wall.”
