Coltman Cup Championship winner Nick Hoffman shared his thoughts on Bobby Pierce being allowed to get his spot back during night 1 of the Peach State Classic at Senoia for the FloRacing Night in America series.
With 6 laps left in the race, Pierce was in a heated battle with Hudson O’Neal for the 6th place. O’Neal was able to cross him over coming out of turn 2 and heading down the back stretch. He then slid him through 3 and 4. As O’Neal went for the slider, Pierce attempted to cross him over and diamond the corner. However, Kyle Bronson ran a slider line behind him and the two collided in the middle of the track and both of them went for a spin.
Pierce did a masterful job trying to keep his wheels spinning by throwing his vehicle into reverse so he would not be sent to the rear and could take advantage of the series’ blend rule.

For clarity, the FloRacing Night in America rules state, “In the event of a caution, the car, or cars, involved in the incident that comes to a stop on the racetrack, will be sent to the rear. If a car spins or creates a caution and you make contact and stop, you are also part of the caution. All cars that are indirectly involved in the accident (spinning or stopping to avoid the wreck without contact made) will be given their position back.”
The blend rule also states, “In the event of an inadvertent caution caused when a driver appears to slow or spin and is able to keep going without stopping, the driver would be blended into the field where they rejoined at the time of the caution flag.”
Following the wreck with Bronson, the series ruled that Pierce did not come to a stop and that he somehow blended back in in the same position he was running before the wreck. Of note the FloRacing ticker indicated he blended back in in 19th behind Chris Ferguson before the series returned him to 7th place.
Hoffman weighed in on this writing on X, “I’m not going to argue if the wheels stopped turning or not, the blend rule is where you “blend” back into the field when you are straightened back out. He was still backwards at the time of the caution which happens a lot of times. You assume your position where you are at when you get turned back around and moving in the direction of traffic.”
“He did not ‘rejoin’ until he was going in the correct direction,” Hoffman observed. “I think that’s pretty clear. They opened can of worms here because now they have to start blending everyone where they are at when the caution is flown and not where they actually blend back into line when they get back up to pace of the field.”

Pierce ended up finishing in 7th and was able to maintain his points lead over Jonathan Davenport despite Davenport winning and himself avoiding being sent to the rear after spinning and making contact with Tyler Millwood earlier in the race.
Pierce’s lead shrunk from 48 points to 27, but he still maintains the lead.
