Ricky Stenhouse Jr. confirmed that his spotter Tab Boyd was fired after his comments about Mexico City on social media.

Boyd was critical of Mexico City ahead of the NASCAR Cup race on Saturday night. He wrote, ” “I’m ready to go home, screw this place, people can talk it up all they want….. can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched….in less than 5 minutes. Good area my ass….”

On June 19th, Fox Sports reporter Bob Pockrass shared that Boyd had been replaced by Clayton Hughes for the upcoming Cup race at Pocono.

Now, Stenhouse has confirmed that Boyd was fired. During an interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, he said, “Obviously, that’s an unfortunate deal. The team let Tab Boyd go this week. We got Clayton Hughes to come fill in. I’ve never worked with Clayton. Obviously, I think, the concern for me is trying to get on the same page as quick as we can knowing, like you said, that the schedule coming up, going to Atlanta next week is a very, could be a very important race for our race team in trying to get us into the playoffs and put us in the right position.”

Boyd’s firing comes after Spire Motorsports fined Carson Hocevar $50,000 and mandated he attend sensitivity training for also criticizing Mexico City. Hocevar said during a Twitch stream, “If the travel was better, if getting here was easier, if you felt safer getting to and from everywhere, if it wasn’t such a s**thole, if the track limits were a little bit better enforced, if it was going to be a little bit better of a race, and [if it didn’t] feel so locked down like you can’t leave anywhere, it’d be a great experience. It’d be an absolute great experience. If you take all those out, it’s unbelievable. It’s great.”

Spire announced it consulted with NASCAR before punishing Hocevar, “Spire Motorsports has informed NASCAR of these penalties, and NASCAR has confirmed that our team-imposed discipline satisfies the sanctioning body’s requirements.”

Given this, it’s extraordinarily likely that NASCAR was involved in the firing of Tab Boyd as well.
