Ricky Thornton Jr. looked like he was going to have a solid night during night one of the Peach State Classic at Senoia, but with 14 laps left in the race he pulled it into the pits and called it a night.
Thornton started off his night qualifying fourth in group a with a time of 13.712. He started second in his heat, but faded back early on, but eventually rallied to finish third, which allowed him to start 11th in the feature.
During the feature, he rode around in 6th and 7th much of the race, but with 14 laps left he pulled into the hot pit with left front damage to the car and never returned to the race eventually finishing in 22nd.
On Facebook, Thornton’s team shared, “Ricky caught the inside wall- folded the nose in and got a left front flat.”
Thornton shared more details in a post-race interview with Jacob Dove. He said, “I got too low, ended up hitting the inside wall. Kinda killed the nose, killed the left front, spindle, tie rod, tire and wheel. Pitted, put another tire and wheel on, but just the damage was too much so figured we’d do the smart thing and just stay in the pits. I pry could have kept going, but had so much toe out I wasn’t going to make very good laps. Kinda sucks, but we’ll move on to tomorrow.”
Despite the problems, Thornton shared he thought he was a top 5 car during the feature, “I felt like feature-wise I was probably a top 5 car. … Like I said, I felt like we were good in the feature. I passed a few cars. Just a lot of yellows compared to how it normally is here. Normally, we just run maybe one, two yellows top. It kind of sucks for how our night went, but on the bright side we’ll get everything tuned up for tomorrow and hopefully we got really good speed.”
