Tyler Erb recently shared his thoughts on whether or not dirt late models should be racing in January and February given the early rainouts at both Golden Isles Speedway for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and at Volusia Speedway Park for the World of Outlaws.

Erb spoke to XR All Gas, No Brakes and was asked, “Do you think we should even be scheduling races in January? … Would you rather have an off season?”

He responded, “Our off season is March. I am not opposed to racing in January, February. Obviously, Florida weather it’s not supposed to snow in February in Florida. So I think global warming is a myth. But I personally like racing. That’s how I do good. You know what I mean?”

“I don’t think we should sit on our hands and thumbs for four months because there’s a lot of people that rely on this and need jobs and need to make money,” he continued. “Not only myself, crew guys, people. I don’t know how many jobs y’all work where you get paid for eight months and the other four months you don’t do s**t and you get a pay check because that’s not how the real world works.”

“I do think we need a month off,” he added. “If we can all just say, ‘Hey, February is our month off or March or whatever. Just kind of look at the weather and decide. I don’t think we need six months off to get ready. If we can race 90 times a year, it shouldn’t be that hard to find three or four weeks where we can all agree like, ‘Hey, we’re done.’ Whether that’s November, December, January, March, wherever it is. But I think going two months for racing is not ideal what we do.”

As for whether or not he thinks all the parties involved can come together and agree on a month to take off, Erb said, “It will never happen. Everybody’s too greedy. If somebody doesn’t schedule a race and the whole month of January is open, somebody is going to schedule a race. And then it’s just a domino effect from there because there’s money to be made. If there’s a race, there’s obviously money to be made or people wouldn’t put on races, and go to races, and support races. So, do I think it will happen? No. But would I like for it to happen? Yeah, that would be cool. I just don’t see it. I don’t ever see it happening like that.”

He elaborated, “They talk about that it floods market, it does this, it does that. But there’s a reason that there’s NFL Network 12 months out of the year. Because if they didn’t somebody would cover and somebody would make the money. It’s just the evolution of life. And if you’re not built for it, then you should take in a different hobby or sport that only requires two months out of the year. Because it’s just the reality of what we do now.”

Tyler Erb is not the only driving to his share his thoughts regarding whether or not there is too much racing especially in January and February. 2023 World of Outlaws Champion Bobby Pierce shared his suggestions earlier this month on X.

He suggested that no racing takes place in January and that the Florida Speedweeks are moved to late February and early March. He also wants to have the Wild West Shootout moved to the beginning of February.
