The Bill Rose Racing team claimed the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series acknowledged they made the wrong call when their driver Bryce Lucius was ruled a lap down after they were involved in a wreck with David Gravel on the final lap of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race at El Paso County Raceway.
After taking the white flag, David Gravel slid up and into the side of Bryce Lucius into turn 1. Gravel made hard contact with Lucius that sent his car into a break dance style maneuver with its rear end spinning on the ground, his front end up in the air and then flipping over on the track before coming to a stop on all four wheels.
While Gravel clearly wrecked, Lucius bounced into the outside wall after the contact from Gravel, but drove away from the wreck. Gravel never passed Lucius and Lucius was ahead of Gravel when Gravel took the white flag.
The Bill Rose Racing team revealed the Outlaws acknowledged their mistake following the race, but seemingly were unable to make it right. The team wrote in a post to Facebook, “On Lap 34 of 35, Gravel made contact with us. We were able to continue, and according to the Outlaw rules, our understanding was that we should have retained our position and restarted 14th. Instead, we were scored as a lap down and sent to the tail of the field despite being on the lead lap. Gravel was leading the race at the time of the incident and had not passed us, so we did not believe the scoring was correct.”
“We restarted behind the lap cars and were unable to recover the position we should have had,” the team added. “After the race, officials acknowledged that the call was incorrect, but unfortunately, the finishing order could not be changed.”
“We’re disappointed with how the situation was handled, but we’re proud of our team for continuing to fight and finish the race. We’ll put this one behind us and get ready for the next one,” the team concluded.
Lucius ended up in 18th place behind Gravel. He was running in that position at the time of the wreck and subsequent red flag, but likely would have advanced past Gravel on the final restart given his car was significantly wounded from the wreck.
Gravel still retains the points lead, but it has shrunk to just a 114 point advantage with Kofoid winning the race. Haudenschild is third, 184 points back. Carson Macedo has a 252 point deficit in fourth and Logan Schuchart concludes the top five, 310 points behind.
The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series continue their trek west. The series will be next in action on September 18-19 for a doubleheader at the Stockton Dirt Track with the Saturday night Dennis Roth Classic race paying $83,000 to win,
The series will stay in California for the rest of the month with trips to Kings Speedway in Hanford on September 22nd, Bakersfield Speedway at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway in Bakersfield on Friday, September 25th, and then Ventura Raceway in Ventura on September 26th.
After the trip to California concludes, the series heads to the Mid-Atlantic for the National Open at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
