David Gravel put all the blame on himself for a last lap wreck with Bryce Lucius that cost him the win at El Paso County Raceway with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series on Monday night.

Early on in the race, it looked like Buddy Kofoid might run away with it after he passed Gravel on lap three to take the lead and began to pull away. Kofoid would extend his lead to nearly two seconds, but once he got into lap traffic, Gravel began reeling him back in. However, Kofoid would work his way through it and then extend his lead to nearly two and a half seconds by lap 15.

A caution for Sheldon Haudenschild on lap 17 tightened the field back up. It looked like Kofoid might pull away again as he did after he took the lead, but this time Gravel never let him get away and began to challenge for the lead on lap 27 showing his nose on the inside of turn 3.

Kofoid fended off that initial challenge, but Gravel was persistent. On lap 32, he took advantage of Kofoid getting caught behind a lap car and motored past him on the inside. Kofoid attempted to reclaim the lead in the turns 3 and 4 with a slide job, but Gravel crossed him over on the front shoot to take control of the lead. In fact, Kofoid fell into the clutches of Carson Macedo, who took the second spot with two laps to go. While those two battled, Gravel jetted away to over a second lead. 

It looked like David Gravel was on his way to victory lane after he took the white flag. That’s not what happened. As he went into turn 1 he slid up and into the side of Bryce Lucius and made hard contact. His car then did a break dance move with its rear end spinning on the track and his front wheels in the air before eventually coming to a stop on all four wheels. 

The wreck would also nab both Carson Macedo and Garet Williamson who stopped in an attempt to avoid the carnage, but were sent to the rear. Kofoid would inherit the lead and went on to win the race while Gravel ended up finishing in 17th.

Following the race, Gravel spoke with DIRTVision’s Conner Wade saying, “Rookie mistake. Just should’ve followed him in the corner. Watching the replay, I had a big enough lead so I didn’t even need to do that. I was kinda protecting and he bobbled a little bit, but it was just a bonehead move.”

“Championship drivers shouldn’t do that,” he added. “Just disgusted with myself. Guys gave me a great race car and, yeah, tore this thing up. Not sure if it’s fixable or not. Definitely really disappointed in myself, for sure.”

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series heads to the Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, California this weekend for the Dennis Roth Classic on Friday, September 18th and Saturday, September 19th. The Friday night race race is a 35-lap $12,000 to win race while the 35-lap Saturday night race pays $83,000 to win.
