Benji Hicks announced he will return to competition with the Spring Nationals this Memorial Day weekend for the series’ triple shot following a wicked wreck at Lake Cumberland earlier this month.
Hicks made the announcement on Facebook, “𝑵𝑬𝑿𝑻 𝑼𝑷… a FULL race weekend ahead following the Southern Nationals Series schedule with weather permitting.” That full schedule includes a trip to North Georgia Speedway on Saturday with $7,553 to-win, Duck River Raceway Park on Sunday for $10,053 to-win, and then Sugar Creek Raceway on Monday for $5,053 to-win.
Hicks added, “After the wild ride the other weekend, we’re thankful to be able to regroup and get right back after it. Huge thanks again to everyone that continues to support this team through the highs and lows of racing. Let’s see what this weekend has in store.”
Hicks was last in action with the Spring Nationals at Lake Cumberland Speedway back on Saturday, May 9th. He was in a battle with Camaron Marlar for the 9th position with around 10 laps left in the 53-lap feature and it appears he clipped the outside wall and then went into a barrel roll down the front stretch.
After the car was flipped over by track officials, Hicks was able to exit the car on his own power and gave a wave to the fans.

In a post on Sunday night following the wreck, Hicks’s team shared an update noting that he was okay, “Lake Cumberland Speedway race recap… and definitely a wild one at that. First off, our driver is okay after a nasty flip last night. We can’t thank everyone enough for all the calls, texts, and messages checking in on us. It definitely wasn’t the night we wanted, but we’re thankful to walk away from it.”
As for what happened in the wreck, the team shared, “Started 12th in the feature and worked our way up to around 8th/9th with 12 laps to go. We started making some serious ground around the top before contact with the wall coming off turn 4 sent us barrel rolling down the front stretch.”
“Racing is a dangerous sport, and nights like this remind you just how important safety equipment really is. Huge thank you to everyone involved that helped get our driver out safely at Lake Cumberland Speedway, and thank you to all of our sponsors, family, crew, and supporters that stand behind us through the highs and lows. The car may be tore up, but we’ll be back,” the team vowed.
Hicks is currently third in Spring Nationals points behind Garrett Smith and Brandon Overton. He has a four point advantage over Kaede Loudy and a 22 point lead over Jack Franklin. Hicks has had solid finishes when he’s shown up to Spring Nationals races. He’s got 1 top 5 and 4 top 10s. His only finish outside the top 10 was at Lake Cumberland when he did not finish the race. His best finish was a fourth place finish at Wythe Raceway back at the beginning of April. Only Hudson O’Neal, Chris Madden, and Matthew Nance finished ahead of him.
