Local standout Dustin Bitzan protected home turf Saturday night at Viking Speedway, sweeping every major category of competition and denying Joe Chisholm a chance at a lucrative weekend bonus as the Kevko Racing USRA Northern Lights Modified Series presented by Real Racing Wheels completed night two of a 3-day swing.
Bitzan was simply untouchable throughout the evening, earning Deatherage Opticians Overall Quick Time honors, winning Rick Bebee Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Race No. 1, and then leading all 25 laps of the Pannell Chipping A-Feature for his first Northern Lights victory.
The dominant performance also spoiled Chisholm’s bid for the Keith Hammett Trucking Weekend Sweep Bonus. After winning the opening event at I-94 Speedway on Friday night, Chisholm entered Viking Speedway with a chance to continue his bid for the $5,000 bonus awarded for sweeping the entire three-race weekend. Bitzan’s victory ended those hopes before weather would ultimately have the final say on the weekend.
While the Northern Lights regulars battled throughout the field, the Viking Speedway and WISSOTA contingent proved exceptionally strong in the feature event. WISSOTA competitors swept the entire top five positions. Bitzan started from the pole and never relinquished command despite constant pressure from Froemming throughout the 25-lap contest. Froemming settled for second with Gerdes advancing to third. Thomas and Sward completed the all-WISSOTA top-five sweep.
The PEM Drivetrain and Gears Hard Charger Award went to Harley Dais, who advanced from 20th starting position to finish 12th in the final rundown.
Saturday’s program also featured a trio of qualifying race winners. Dustin Bitzan captured Rick Bebee Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Race No. 1, Travis Saurer claimed Smith Equipment Company Heat Race No. 2, and Justin Froemming won Kevko Racing Products Heat Race No. 3. Earlier in the evening, Bitzan set the standard in Deatherage Opticians Qualifying with a lap of 20.485 seconds around the Viking Speedway oval.
Unfortunately, the third and final night of the weekend at Granite City Motor Park never got the opportunity to take the green flag. A quickly changing weather pattern proved too much to overcome as persistent early afternoon rains forced officials to cancel Sunday’s scheduled event in Sauk Rapids, bringing the Memorial Day weekend swing to an early conclusion.
The Kevko Racing USRA Northern Lights Modified Series presented by Real Racing Wheels will return to action June 20 when the series makes its inaugural appearance at Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minnesota.
